Does anybody know if you can get Metformin in 250mg tablets. I have been taking 500mg tablets twice a day, with breakfast and before my evening meal for the last 5 years.

I started playing about recently and splitting the tablets so they are spread throughout the day, before each of my 3 main meals and before bed time. I have found this gives two effects. Firstly my BS readings are slightly lower and more stable and secondly, my morning readings when I wake are consistently 7-8 whereas previously it would be around 10.

I can keep using the pill splitter but it would be more convenient if I could get smaller dose tablets, no response from my diabetic practitioner yet.

I don't think you can get less than 500mg. Note that you shouldn't split Metformin SR, the Slow Release version.

I don’t think they are available as 250mg tablets, as when I was first prescribed the 500mg ones I had difficulty swallowing them, so asked if they came as 250mg ones. The answer was ‘no’!
As @Daibell says you shouldn’t split them if they are slow release.

Thanks, they are not the SR version. I will stick to the pill chopper then!
