I've got a question about metformin. Should metformin be taken 3 times a day, at the same times each day, e.g. 8am, 2pm, 8pm, or should it just be taken with food? So if you were to just eat at 10am and then 7pm, would you take metformin just twice on that day? Thanks

Welcome to the forum :)

Regarding Metformin, it is generally advised to take with, or after, food because of possible unpleasant gut effects. I believe most diabetics on Metformin would take this twice a day, ie morning and evening, both with/after eating. If you are presecribed 3 tablets, then there's no reason that I can think of, to take after breakfast, lunch and evening meal. Some diabetics may take 2 tabs after breakfast and one after evening meal.

So, if you were to eat at 10am and then 7am, I think you would be OK to take two after 10am meal and one after your 7pm meal.

As for the timing of these meds, I don't think it particularly matters. They take a while to accumulate functional levels in your body and don't directly work on glucose levels.

If you are able, I would suggest you pop into a pharmacy and pose this question to the pharmacist. They are very knowledgeable, more so than doctors, usually, as this is what they have specifically trained to understand.

I take metformin 3 times a day at approximately the same time.

7am with breakfast
1pm with lunch
9pm with late snack.

If in any doubt, check with your surgery or your pharmacist. Ive found pharmacists very helpful when I haven't had the time to contact my surgery :)
