Hi, first time post, be gentle with me!

UK Long term type 2, very confused about what is the 'least bad' milk option (mostly to have in coffee). A couple of years ago I switched to Oat Milk (usually Lidl Barista brand, but sometimes Alpro No Sugars) as I read this would be more gentle on BS spikes. Today I've read that the maltose in oat milk is worse than the lactose in cows milk! Furthermore that full fat cows milk or even double cream is a better option. Any help or views gratefully received!

I listened to an interesting podcast about milk all the different types and their impact. There is also a transcript on the page if you prefer to just read the salient points

Oat milk definitely seems to be one of the higher carb ones.
I use full fat cows milk to make kefir but the ferment gets rid of the lactose.
I always only use double cream - small splash in coffee but these days I'm working on drinking my coffee black.
Hope this helps
Edit just spotted you've just joined the forum welcome you'll find lots of information and support in here so ask away

The best way to see what affects your body is to do finger prick tests to see what is happening to your bg.
We are all different

I listened to that podcast too. Have always been wary of how these non dairy milks are made/processed/preserved. And very expensive. A single almond and water can make loads at negligible cost.

Also, I used to think I was lactose intolerant until I switched to low carb when all my symptoms disappeared. Turned out it was other sugars (-oses) I was reacting to, not lactose

If what you're interested in is lowering the impact on blood glucose, then cream, or failing that, the highest fat milk you can get will have the least effect. I know people who use oatly because of a lactose intolerance but none of these "milks" have no sugars.

I find most milk too sweet these days but I use double cream in my morning coffee - usually 2 x 2 shots, coffee made in a mocha pot. Does absolutely nothing to my BG.

And - welcome to the forums.

Testing your blood glucose would help, but otherwise, yeah... Cream would be a good option. And if none is available, something full fat, sugar free.

If you want the convenance of a bought "milk" I've found unsweetened Almond works for me. I've yet to try it in tea, but in coffee it's an acceptable substitute for cow dairy, having recently discovered what my "good slug" of S/S in my 1st coffee of the morning does

I'm someone who only has double cream in my coffee, although with tea I like a little seme skimmed milk. I used to only buy skimmed milk but then discovered that it's not the best. I think full fat milk is the better one but I don't like it.
