Hi Guys,

I am kumar, age 27.
I lost weight rapidly in last 6 months. Yesterday's checkup confirmed as diabetic with sugar level 373 and hb1ac as 14.26.
doctor asked me to take glycomet 500 mg after breakfast for two weeks and then again go for test.nothing more than that.

I am still in shock. Its a peak time for me regarding career/marriage etc.
Can i lead a normal life? most of the people will get this after 40 years right?

Some very young children are diagnosed with diabetes and spend their whole lives injecting insulin. The greater number are diagnosed later in life but with type 2 diabetes which means they have some pancreatic function.

You can lead a normal life although the things you eat might be subject to review since some things are not good for diabetics.

Don't worry, as you learn about things a new sort of "normal" life will feel OK but just a bit different from the old life.

The disease can strike at any time and is more likely to be triggered by poor nutrition and inactivity. Many men over 40 get it because they eat like they did when they were in their 20s but they stopped doing sports in their 30s and after another 10 years they suddenly pay the price.

You can lead a perfectly normal life but you will have to careful with what you eat and you should really take more exercise.

I got it in my late 50s. Too much weight, eating too much sweet stuff and doing less and less. I thought the slowing down was just me getting old. Last year, on holiday I found it difficult just walking from the hotel to the car park or walking around the shops. This year, having lost weight and eating much better food I found myself walking all day along narrow paths in the high alps so you can even get back some of the things you lost.

But you have to put in the effort. It doesn't happen by itself.

Hi. When you said a blood sugar of 373 did you mean 37.3? There is no such reading in the UK of 373. Your HBa1c of 14.26 is extremely high and needs urgent action. Due to your young age I suspect you are not T2 but T1.5 (LADA) which is late onset T1. There are tests for this e.g. GAD for antibodies and c-peptide for insulin level. If you are T1.5 then you will probably need to start insulin very soon as tablets will not be effective for long. Do keep an eye on your blood sugar levels and if they go into the 20s with your meter then check for ketones as high sugar with ketones present can be dangerous. Sorry to bring possible bad news but do have a serious discussion with your doctor as your Hba1c needs to be kept somewhere below 7.5% to be healthy. If you do need Insulin it is a nuisance but not that bad. I started 5 months ago and it's easier than I thought it would be.

Hi guys, thanks for reply. Now I know the reason why I m losing weight.so,if I follow proper diet and medication ;can I gain weight? Because my legs n hands were very skinny now.. Or gone is gone ?

You can build up muscle by exercising the parts you want to strengthen. It's tricky to lose fat in some places and build muscle in other places at the same time though. People make careers out of telling you how to do it and many of the methods don't work. You don't want to be taking body building supplements or increasing what you eat. It's better to concentrate on the diabetes by watching your diet but increasing the amount you exercise. Rowing is good for arms and legs.

373 is g/dl and is about 20.5mmols/l
