Hello,
I am not sure whether it’s total coincidence or whether anyone else has experienced similar? I had the Mirena in for 2 years. During that time I put on 8kg and was told Type 2 when my hba1c rose out of prediabetic ange. I knew this had happened, as I went to Drs saying I feel like my sugars are high. I have tried to loose the excess weight and eat healthily. A few days ago I had the coil removed, as a last ditch attempt to try and control my diabetes and shift the bloat. I haven’t been able to wear my rings for 2 years! That’ll be my measuring gauge hehe if they fit again I know was the coil. The main reason I’m asking here is...I have had months of high bs, fasting 10-14 and 2 hours after meal 16-24! These are the highest readings I’ve ever had. Did 2 months Aloglptin, didn’t impact levels at all, had higher hba1c so they stopped. Did one week on Jardiance and stopped due to severe yeast infection. Currently med free but meant start on another one. Waiting as side effect is possible weight gain and water retention! Nooo! The strange thing is, my bs levels have dropped! I’m getting readings of 8, 9, even had a 6 today which for me is really low. I do feel unwell, like I’m walking through mud and my legs want stop, and keep getting sudden sick feeling, bit like before bs drop too low (for me it’s 4.3, get the shakes etc) . I’m type 2 and have blood test strips that I buy, the dn and dr don’t like me tasting but equally tell me levels are too high. Has anyone had hormone/coil change and seen vast change in bs levels?
I guess need see over next few weeks how bs levels stay?

The hormone in the Mirena can raise bloodsugars, and there is such a thing as the "Mirena Crash", which you described, after removal. And in some people the Mirena actually ended up causing T2. So yeah, it could be that you'll get better bloodsugar control now. I get a Depo Provera jab myself every few months because Mirena and I didn't get on well. (Small womb, I had contractions for half a year before we figured out what was causing the pain). The shots have their own side effects, but for me, it's the only way to have some control over the migraines. I was always sturdy, but when I got the Mirena the first time (I had three until the last one sent me to hospital), I gained a lot of weight in 3 months. And every time I changed it, I gained some more. Add a not very helpful dietician to that... It did not go well.

So... Have had shots now for years instead. And in the meantime got my diabetes T2 diagnosis, started low carbing... The weight's not entirely gone, but I'm not morbidly obese anymore, so yay. And good on you for testing, because how else are you going to know what's going on eh?

As for eating healthily, I hope you know that for a T2 that means something entirely different than the common advice? You might be able to avoid T2 meds entirely. As for getting the shakes at 4.3, that's a false hypo. It feels like a hypo because your body thinks that it is, because it's used to you having higher levels. So it freaks out the way it would if you were. It'll get used to normal numbers soon!

In any case... Hope this helps!

Hello @Rose22

I only lasted a year with this, absolutely hated having it, it really affected my mood as well as my BG control, was running high alot with this, it was noticeable within days after removal that my control improved, some women report that they are fine with it, but not me :(

I'm one of the ones that get on well with the Mirena - but I have had reactions to other hormonal interventions (progesterone and the pill) so I can absolutely believe that some people get reactions to the Mirena. Heck, there is a risk to reactions from just about anything. And there are well established links between monthly hormonal reactions, weight fluctuations, mood fluctuations and blood glucose fluctuations, so it seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I will be having the mirena removed soon (as I am reaching menopause) so I sincerely hope that the removal has a beneficial effect on my blood glucose!

Thats fantastic info, thankyou all so much for your help! I found Mirena great, no more agonising pain and low ferritin levels but I never made the connection of it and my diabetes. Only of it and the sudden weight increase. I’m hopeful that it’ll drop a bit and I can see how bs levels go. The dr said they’d refer me to a gyn if back to old monthly ways. All the ladies in my family have ended up with hysterectomies, including my type 1 grandmother. I need try reduce my carbs more and up the exercise but feel I’ve done that lots over the past 3 years from being told prediabetic and panicking! Felt it was really out of control last few months and fed up of feeling sick and tired really.

Thankyou it’s very helpful. I’d not heard of the mirena crash... looked it up, yep I think it’s me right now! Hmm you’d think the drs would warn might feel a bit lousy/odd whilst body adjusts.

That’s like me then, within days a change in bs results. If only I’d thought about this a year ago!
