Misleading avatars.

SB.25 That's got to be rotten. I know someone like that. She doesn't have the antibodies but makes no insulin, so they label her type 1. Sometimes she calls herself type 1.5. There is a group of people out there like that. But they don't make insulin, so they fit a type 1. She is actually a registered dietician and specializes in diabetes nutrition counseling.

You have a new avatar

I am 'other' and it looks as if I will stay that way until someone finds a way to compress the explanation (which is explained in my profile, and included in my signature) into the section under my avatar pic on each post.

After 45 years of Reactive Hypoglycaemia, and 5 years of Type 2 Diabetes, and a lifetime of continuously tweaking my diet and drifting lower and lower carb, I went strictly Gluten Free. I found that both the raised blood glucose and the Reactive Hypoglycaemia faded away over a 6 month period. I can now tolerate moderate carbs, provided they are free of wheat and gluten. Pity I didn't discover this 40 years ago, but no use crying over spilled breadcrumbs, eh?

I can and do still hypo, but not nearly as badly, so I consider myself virtually RH free nowadays, and have chosen the 'Other' description, rather than RH or T2, pr Pre-Diabetes, or a combo, since I no longer have blood glucose readings that would entitle me to those designations (unless I eat the wrong things).

Would you not feel comfortable with “ diet controlled “ or “ in remission “ ?
Obviously “ cured” would be a step to far.

It is rotten! They have established I don’t have anti bodies but I also only produce a very little amount of my own insulin (from my c peptide test) in December. I’ve just had another c peptide test to see if my insulin production has decline even further.

Agreed. In my case Prediabetes (diet controlled) would be perfect.

I like your signature, btw.

I have the 'diet only' section checked in my profile so that info is already there, and I mention it in my sig, and in the info section of my profile.

Besides, I chose 'other' because I am happy that it best describes my situation, and continue to feel I made the right decision.
When my circumstances change (which they inevitably will, one day) I will reassess my choice.

I think the system we have here works well as it is. For sure it would be better if more folk declared their diabetes and medication types, but “other” seems perfectly acceptable to me, particularly when even the professionals sometimes cannot determine which pigeonhole a patient should be in. If someone is asking for help or advice and the information is not provided then I will either ask or not comment. It doesn’t really strike me as misleading.

I think there are some cases that justify “other”. In those cases something in the signature seems a good way to clarify without having to repeatedly request the info or have an infinite list of options

I find it more frustrating when people don’t put anything at all regarding type or medication on either their avatar or even their profile information

It could be useful to have the option of 2 or 3 designations - some members may have type one, yet be taking care of someone with type two - as well as being an HCP themselves. Or there could be another set of things to choose from to indicate level of control, so people can easily tell if someone is struggling or has got it nailed.

I’m not referring to the options available when new members join.
I thought you were referring to the list of options on joining, which does show 'Pre-diabetes' though perhaps it can't be seen on some pc browsers or mobile apps.

Agreed there. I came across that one a few months back.

Yes, I remember now about 'therower's phone, so please disregard the 'are you using a phone' @therower

Wouldn't it be more confusing if you came across a profile where the user had ticked T1 and T2. My first reaction would be ' well which are you".

I have been following this thread this morning and just had a rummage in my profile and have found a use for ‘other’. I have opted for other now and added ‘type 2 well controlled’ into the ‘custom’ box. That is the description I have always preferred rather than ‘in remission’ which I had as the next best description up until 2 minutes ago!

The problem we seem to see more and more frequently is newbies not filling in their profile settings. It does actually say that the boxes for type and treatment are required. In other words, they should be filled in. This appears to be because those joining using the App can't see these boxes. We have to log in using a browser to access the website before we can see these boxes. I am getting very frustrated at having to ask newbies to do this.

I see something different from most when I open the "type" box. I see

Where is this ‘custom’ box. Can’t find one on the iPad

I see the same as you

Can’t type and medication be an essential part of the sign up process rather than optional extras? (Despite the required comment they are optional). Privacy is protected by the prefer not to say choice
