I was diagnosed T2D just over five weeks ago and was fortunately spotted early - 6.6.

I immediately read up on LCHF diets and I’ve stuck to it for five weeks, and am actually enjoying eating fresh foods, and tasting them.

One of my colleagues today said “you’ll be really disappointed if your numbers aren’t lower on your three month blood test”. Too right I will! And she is T2D too!

I’m now doubting myself. Am I doing the right thing?

Have you been testing?
That is going to give you the best idea if you are on track for the improvement you have been working towards.

Nice colleague..! please ignore her and carry on as you are doing. I would suggest though that getting yourself a meter will put you in a far better position to see your progress.... and wiping the smile off your colleagues face of course!

A meter is essential to see how foods affect you. We are all different and what suits you may not suit me.

@Rachox has good info on meters.

Once you have your meter, download the mySugr app and record your numbers and the food you eat and anything else you want.

After a few days of entering data it will give you an estimated HbA1c number.

I found it to be highly motivating. A lot of us use it.

Here are some meters that are popular on the forum:

Taken from a post by @Bluetit1802 as she wrote it so nicely:

The most popular meters for self funding T2's are the Codefree and the Tee2 because the strips are much cheaper than other meters, and you need a lot of strips. You can't buy them in pharmacies.

Try here for the Codefree meter

Showing as out of stock at the moment but also available from Amazon, link below.

and here for the extra strips

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

The Tee2 is here and the meter is free.

Don’t forget to check the box that you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for either meter)

Ah the support of friends. It can be invaluable. Is she doing LCHF too or trying to undermine you.

Ah, I got much the same response from another T2 who likes to make fun of my diet. My HbA1c is now 34, no meds. She's on insulin and doesn't understand why her numbers go up when she eats a cupcake. Just panics that they do. Envy? Maybe not daring to take such measures for themselves? Who'll say for sure? But you are on the right track. No worries.

You'll need to ignore her too. Look after yourself first.

mysugr is really good. Predicted HbA1c score is a real motivator.
Like you I'm enjoying the new diet - plenty of good stuff to choose from.
Keep going

I would not expect disappointment - total astonishment more like - as long as you have read the instructions and understood what you are about your Hba1c should have dropped.
Mine went from 91 to 47 in 80 days from diagnosis - that is not even diabetic level.

I went from 122 to 35 in 6 months.

If you want to be really catty, when you get your "normal" HbA1c number, ask her what she is saving up for first, the guide dog or the wheelchair. Only joking.
