Morning Highs

I have just had my latest Hba1c back from and it is 53. I aren't sure what to make of that, as my doctor tells me that it's within the normal expected range as been managed.

My previous ones were 46 and 49. He put me on statins before xmas, as my cholesterol was higher than it should perhaps be and since then my morning blood sugar has been averaging around 7.

Just looking for opinions and tips on how I can lower my morning sugar levels?

I eat a pretty healthy diet and I and regularly go to the gym and cycle, I am only 10st and obviously thin, but then again I have never been fat or obese and have never smoked.. I would like to put some weight on but I don't seem to be able too.

Your GP thinks that raising your HbA1c is "normal" ??

What diet do you eat ? as it doesn't look like what you are doing is working.

Personally I would want to know all the numerical details and ratios from the blood lipid profile.
In the past I have done it privately with a home test kit but it requires drawing quite a bit of blood compared to a blood glucose test.
As you are not over weight weight loss as an aid to getting your blood glucose under control isn't in the tool box and depending too much on exercise for control can be double edged sword. For me eating lots of fish, olive and walnut oil eggs and salad and peanut butter worked on both blood glucose and cholesterol.

The doctor said that the 53 was within tolerance levels and he wasn't concerned because it is still within what the they consider normal range for type 2.

My diet well I eat a lot of fish, vegetables, white meat and some carbs. For example my typical meals would be

Breakfast - porridge with some nuts made with either almond milk or goats milk
I have a protein shake with this every other morning.

Lunch - Typically something like a small amount of pasta with broccoli and chicken in white wine sauce.

Tea - steamed cod with vegetables.

I snack a lot of nuts, such as brazils, walnuts and have a lot of peanut butter with celery (I absolutely love that).

That is just a sample day. I do like a few pints at the weekend as well, you do have to live after all.

If you stop eating the starchy foodstuffs like Porridge and Pasta (also bread, potatoes & rice if you eat them) you will probably find that your BG levels will reduce.

The approach of the NHS appears to be to try and control Diabetes but to accept that it will progressively get worse over time.

You don't have to accept this course if you don't want to, and you can take control yourself.

Have you read the starter pack email from @daisy1 which explains the role of Carbohydrates and how they affect your BG ?

I do stay away from potato, rice and bread. Although I do have the occasional couple slices of wholewheat seeded bread. Porridge doesn't actually have that much effect on my sugars so that is why I eat it and neither does a little bit of pasta.

I feel pretty healthy myself and I am 5ft 11 and 10 stone, so I need to shove some weight on for starters.

It really seems to be the statins that have put up my levels rather my diet. I was doing exactly the same for the past year and had 46 and 49.

All the advice from both the NHS and various other places, all seems to be targeting obese people and there certainly isn't much advice for naturally thin folk like myself. I know that I am not a usual case but any advice is appreciated.

What alternatives do I have as food replacements for example?

Hi @dwelldon
I still think you should try dropping the porridge and pasta for a week and see what impact that has. Also I would give the beer a miss for that week as well. With the beer can you drink packaged beer with a low Carb Content. We have a brand Pale Blond that has .5 carb per 100ml and is very drinkable. I don't know if it is available in the UK but perhaps there are lower carb alternatives?

Pasta is top of the must completely avoid list, the blood glucose rise can come hours after your meal.
The effect of porridge seems to vary from person but again if is going to hit it could be hours before it shows up as sugars.

As far as your FBG levels, they will come down as and when you reduce the stores of Glucose in your Liver and muscles.

I can understand your weight issue as reducing Carbs will often result in weight loss, but unfortunately the only way to reduce BG without using drugs or insulin is by reducing your intake of carbs.

My BMI is 19. I can't lose any more weight, as it would be very very unhealthy. What alternatives are there to carbs like pasta that will give me as much energy from them?

Fat, that's not much of an alternative, that effects your cholesterol

For me eating lots of fish, olive and walnut oil eggs and salad and peanut butter worked on both blood glucose and cholesterol.
That's what I'm trying minus the peanut butter. Would you recommend any particular make?

I know all fats aren't bad, but just simply stating FAT that's not much help at all. I have cut out pasta before and it really didn't have a dramatic effect. I am willing to try most things, just be nice to get some proper suggestions!

Try a tablespoon of good olive oil with your meal, avocado, streaky bacon.....

It's probably better that you do your own research, as sitting there demanding "suggestions" and then just saying no to them get's a little bit tiresome after a while.

After I went over to low carb higher fat, lots of eggs, olive oil, double cream my bad cholesterol fell to the floor and my blood pressure is lower than it was 40 years ago.

Personally Sainsburys Basics Crunchy hits the spot best.
I have also be using Cashew butter as a coating when cooking chicken and turkey.
