HI Everyone,

I just started a Basal Bolus regime recently and my BG levels have been very good with one exception. I always tend to be a bit low in the morning. I have tried reducing my lantus that didn't work so I have tried eating a snack before bedtime but that didn't work either. has anyone got any tips or advice.

Hi @colsal Good news on starting the basal/bolus, it is a much easier way to manage your type 1. What is your basal and when do you take it ? It does sound like you are still on too much basal, but let us know what you regime is first ?

Hi @colsal , when you say "a bit low" what do you mean? Are you actually waking up hypo? Or are you too low to do something (exercise/drive) that you want to do in the morning?

Because if you are waking up under target but not hypo and not too low to stop you going on with your day it might not be anything to worry about.

What are your blood sugar levels going to bed and waking up?

HI All,

my basal is 12 units and I take it around 21:30 each night. the last few days I have woken to a BG of around 3.2. once I take my morning bolus and eat breakfast I am fine but it feels like I'm waking up with a hangover each morning

Reduce your basal dose @colsal, 3.2 is far too low to be waking up on and your bg levels may have been even lower prior to you waking (hence the hangover effect).

Easiest way of knowing is to do some tests through the night to get a better picture of what is happening with your bg levels.

Have you got 1/2 unit pens? If not try to get them for your bolus and basal. Sometimes a 1/2!tweak is all that is needed to fine tune basals..

I reduced my basal dose last night and woke this morning with a 6.5 which was great. Had the same amount of carbs as any other day but 2 hours after breakfast I was 11.2 and again 2 hours after dinner was 16.6. I think you may be right a 1/2 dose pen might do the trick. Back to see my nurse on Monday so will discuss with her then. Thanks for all the advice.
