Hello everyone. I have been very depressed lately because of my weight (need to lose about 2.5 stones) but also because my hbA1c has jumped from 50 to 60 over the past year.
I haven't been taking good care of myself after a bereavement but I am considering self funding for Mounjaro. I cannot see my nurse until December but want to go forward with my plan before then.
My questions are;
Would I need to be in this drug for life?
Do some people with T2 just take it as a way of getting off to a good start with weightloss?
Would weight pile back on once it's stopped?
Any experiences please?
Thank you.

Thank you Sarah. Not worth trying then - couldn't afford it for more than 3 months.

What I have read (sorry can't think of where) is that the idea is that you are supposed to only be on one of these Ozempic-style drugs for a short period, to get weight loss started: at the same time you are supposed to start a diet and exercise programme. The issue is, as the poster above says, is that over time fat and muscle will vanish, and muscle is so much harder to rebuild. If nothing else changes, as soon as the drug is stopped, the fat (but not the lost muscle) will be regained.

Edited - as I recall the ozempic treatment info is from Dr Michael Eades' "The Arrow" blog.

Hi @Julie1972 , I have had a similar history to you in that I suffered bereavement from the death of both my parents a few years ago. Although I kept low carb and kept my HbA1c with in normal range, I comfort ate by over doing the fats, think cream and dark chocolate and put on weight. When I came to my diabetes review in ‘23 I asked about these type of meds to maintain my diabetes and give me a kick start losing the weight I had gained. So I was switched from Metformin to Victoza a GLP1 med and lost some of the weight. Victoza became impossible to get at the end of last year (due to all the hype about ‘skinny jabs’), so I went back to Metformin, but found I couldn’t tolerate it any more. I was then switched to Rybelsus a tablet version GLP1 med. I have kept my diabetes under control along side a low carb diet and lost more weight on it. As far as I know it is possible to take it long term and as it’s only licensed for type 2 diabetes not weight loss it has remained readily available, although weight loss has been a happy side effect for me.
Could you get an appt. with a GP sooner than with the nurse and enquire about this alternative?

Thank you both. Interesting to read Dr Eades' take on things! I think I will call the surgery to ask for an appointment with my gp as I do need guidance and help. I was always able to do better than this but I have been knocked sideways this past year.
I'm so sorry for your loss Rachox.
