My 24 Hrs in hospital. I'm not happy.

Spent most of yesterday throwing up and had high bloods. Highest 20. So went to walk in centre, who sent me to hospital. Hospital found ++ ketones, blood and protein in urine. Also had very high blood pressure 218/125 :shock: :o despite being on BP meds. New BP med added and IV fluids started as well as anti sick meds. All my high BG levels were put down to tooth ache and me being sick. As i hadn't eatern my BGs then started to fall so they thought that was ok. I've bben discharged tonight with anti sick meds and a new BP med ( amlodophine) and have to have further outpatient investigations re BP. They let me out as a diabetic with a BP of 105/105, no further BG meds etc and they know i had DKA in Dec. I am just a tad annoyed :twisted:
I shall be booking an appt with my GP and diabetic nurse for asap.
 
Hi Claire, sounds like you have had a bit of a nightmare, I do hope you are feeling better soon. I have heard some infections and illnesses can play havoc with bg levels although I am lucky that I have yet to experience such violent reactions.

It may be worth asking to see a specialist diabetic unit rather than your GP or practice nurse whos diabetic knowledge is often less than perfect.

Your high bp may even have been caused by your high bg levels too courtesy of the toothache and sickness.

I phoned the dentist when they opened and explained that i'd been admitted to hospital with sickness and high blood sugars and that the Drs thought my tooth was the main problem. When i was put on the emergency list on Thurs i was number 8 on it, i am now number 5 :shock: However, they are seeing me today at 10.30! Am nervous as i hate the dentists and know i need a lot doing.
Have also managed to get an appt with DN for Thurs am. They have to go through the Dr for refs to the hospital clinic and she asked him to refer me before after my DKA experience and he wouldn't :evil: I am now going to insist my meds are either added to or changed (poss start insulin) and that i am ref to the hospital clinic.

Hope all went well at the dentist... that sounds awful.

I am not sure about the GP thing though...as Sid says, you are usually better talking to the experts.. but, in my limited experience, I have had one occasion where the GP was fabulous with my diabetes, and it was to do with being discharged from hospital. I got discharged from hospital, after giving birth, and one of the results of my blood tests was off the scale. I forget which is was to be honest, something to do with platelets and clotting. The GP saw this in my discharge notes...and went ballistic! I was not even aware of a problem, (as the hospital had just said "everything is fine") until the hospital consulatnt phoned me at home, and said that he had just been shouted at, by my GP, and that he was now following me up. I ended up with BP meds for a while as well...but it was only thanks to me GP! This particular GP freely admits he is no diabetes expert..one of the other GPs has this role, but he did recognise when something was wrong. If you are able, make a GP appointment...the more people you get looking into this the better, particulay after your DKA experience!

Am back from the dentist. Had a bit of a trial as he asked me to go to the drs and get a list of all my meds. Drs couldn't do that as some new ones arn't on screen yet. So had to go home and get meds then take back to dentist. Anyway i am being sent to a specialist as i have bad bone degenaration, need at least 4 teeth out and also an impacted wisdom tooth. I also now have a five day course of antibiotics. As my Drs is on the same complex as the dentist i popped in there afterwards and have a Drs appt booked for Thurs pm. So am now seeing DN thurs am and Dr thurs pm.
 
Have just got back from seeing the DN. She isn't too concerned, she thinks my levels will come down again when i get the teeth sorted. No ketones in urine today. Advised me to try and eat little and often and to keep drinking lots of fluids. If my HbA1C at the end of July is still on the high side she will put me on insulin.
Went and had blood test re blood pressure and collected the big 'ol pot for a 24hr urine collection i have to do!
Am back seeing the Dr this afternoon so will see what he has to say about everything. Will update you again later.
 
Oh for heavens sake :roll: Just phoned Drs as my appt wasn't showing up on my online thing. I thought it was because of my appt this morning with the DN and it would show when i'd had that. Nope, whoever it was i saw on Monday didn't book it properly :evil: :shock: So i now have to go to a different surgery that we are merged with tomorrow morning.
 
If your HbA1c in July is high, don't forget to point out that stress - some caused by HCPs in your case at the moment - raises blood glucose levels!

They're messing you about a bit, aren't they? You could have a gentle complain about the wrongly booked appointment - I'm sure you have b etter things to do with your time!

Best of luck tomorrow! Your blood pressure will be high too :lol:

It's a good job i found out before i actually got to the Drs about the appointment as there may have been steam coming out my ears :lol: It was only by commenting on the phone,that i thought today was a bit long to wait for someone who had been discharged from hospital on Monday that i managed to get an appointment for tomorrow. Otherwise i would have had to wait until Wednesday!
 
I am so lucky with my GP practice - if you get there before 10:30am you'll be seen, we don't have appointments in the morning.

Afternoon appointments run from 16:00 to 17:30, and are reserved for schoolkids/workers - but if you're in desperate need they will always see you.

Only the practice nurses have an appointment system - but again, if they know you're not a time-waster (ie if you ask to see them, you probably need to!) they'll slip you in somewhere.

We're an enormous practice geographically, but with relatively few patients (in comparison to inner cities). We are so lucky!

Am back from seeing the Dr. She was lovely :D My BP is coming down nicely 130/85, so much better than the 218/125 i had in hosp! She gave me more pain and anti sickness meds and more test strips. Usually i have to really fight to get strips but she didn't bat an eyelid :D Will have to try and see her again when my strips run out :wink: Blood sugars still high but she is in agreement with the DN that they will settle when my teeth problems are sorted. Just hope i get to see the maxo consultant soon.
 
Well done, you must be feeling much less stressed.

I always go to the same GP if I can, though I'll go to any of ours in an emergency. It's worth building a relationship - even if he does hide when he sees me coming :lol:

I will try and see this Dr as much as possible Viv although she's not the one i'm registered with. I felt more comfortable with her and she seemed a lot more understanding. Have also been and had my hair chopped off this afternoon so am feeling much better :D
