My Atkins Life

So I weighed in and am a bit disappointed if I'm honest. Still lost 1.1kg, 2lb 1/4 in old money which is acceptable but I have to admit I was looking for double that off this week. Probably a bit ambitious and unrealistic but thought it could just happen.

Of that 1.1kg, 0.9kg was actual fat loss so that is encouraging and means I am burning fat stores which is the name of the game.

So do I have another week on 20g carbs, no fruit or nuts, or do I move up to 25g with the forbidden fruit included?

I could try a week on 25g and if weightloss is disappointing, could revert back to 20g the week after.

Decisions decisions....

Interesting reading. Are you using the new Atkins? The revised edition?

Hhhhhmmmmm....... I guess you are balancing your capacity for what you feel is deprivation. Only you can tell exactly how you would cope with going up and down 20g<>25g<>20g<>25g.

I didn't do that. Well, I didn't really follow a structured plan to be honest, as losing weight wasn't my objective. Getting my numbers in range was. It also helped not to have weighing scales here initially, and not bumping into any in shops or other people's homes, so I had lost pretty much all my initial weight by the time I first weighed. I have lost more since, but mainly whilst trying to stabilise. But, that's another challenge you will come to, in time.

For me? I couldn't set up the potential yo-yo - especially when you already feel deprived. As you describe yourself as needing to lose a fair amount, and you need to eat lower carb for good, I might be inclined to accept a slower loss, with the upside of a kinder eating regime, and your body having it's best chance to shrink as you lose; thus minimising the potential for excess skin.

You do seem wonderfully inventive with your food though. I'm enjoying reading of your creativity.

Lol yo yo dieting has now been redefined! Within 5g lea way.

My low carb megastore order came and I had two lemon biscuits. Wow! Dipped in cream were lovely and still within my allowance.

I'm not really 'suffering' with Atkins - just miss being able to grab nuts! I've got cupboards full of them and if I can't have nuts, I can't make cheesecake! I lurve cheesecake!

I think I'm going to have a week at 25g with fruit included. I can't see it killing me. Must also drink a lot more water as I feel bloated today.

My initial goal wast to control BG and I have I think - am in the fives now which I'm really really pleased with, but the docs always harp on about weight so I'd like to show them I'm doing it all. Sometimes I feel that being overweight overrules any other possible explanation for things! I also want to be lighter to aid my prolapsed disc which is causing me so much pain constantly throughout the day, despite my cocktail of drugs. :(

Anyway I can't see really that reintroducing 5g of nuts and strawberries carbs is going to balloon me. I forget common sense sometimes.

I think when I read other people's successes that I want a piece of that too! It seems unfair too that I've changed my whole life since diagnosis and achieved a slow loss, where others (mainly blokes grrr) lose stones in a month!!

But overall I know this isn't a race and longevity is the key. Ultimately I really like this diet regime and will continue to experiment!

I love your comments so keep them coming!

My comments regarding the yo-yo were mainly the addition, then potential removal (repeat as necessary) of the things you seem to crave. Sooner or later that must feel like deprivation, fuelled by frustration.

Wanting the same as others is only natural, but when you read a success story it often appears to have happened quickly, where it is still likely to be over a number of months. And, forgive me, but my own measure of success is not achieving the goal, it's retaining that level. Almost anyone can continue something that's working and returning results day in day out. When day to day is same old, same old, that'll be when it gets tricky for me. Perhaps I just need to keep resetting my goals.

I think it's good to reassess goals from time to time as nothing is ever stagnant. It's definitely a journey and I don't intend to go back to my old lifestyle. I've just had my strawberries and savoured every mouthful. Yuuuuummm!!! X

Off topic, but is it normal to lose appetite on the low carb/modified Atkins diet? What are your experiences? Ive just been doing it recently...I don't feel really hungry anymore and most of the time rarely do I get to finish my meal or I'd feel sick if i get too full, sometimes Want to miss a meal even...thanks! Hope I can get feedback from those who have done it longer :) thanks!

Apparently intermittent fasting becomes much easier once you've gone through the adaptation for fat burning - because you're able to access the fat stores in your body for energy, you don't feel hungry in the same way you would when you were adapted for burning glucose and requiring frequent "top-ups". The experiment of the guy who fasted for over a year just living off his own fat stores seems to indicate that it works quite well if you have enough fat to burn:

Low carb is great for not feeling hungry. I definitely don't feel like I'm on a diet of depravation! I think once carbs are out, fat keeps you satisfied for much longer and because you've enjoyed a rich meal, you don't get so hungry after.

Old habits die hard though - sometimes I'll calculate how long it's been since I've eaten even if I'm not hungry! If it's been a while, I get the 'should I eat then?' Thoughts in my head!

Overall though I definitely enjoy low carbing.

Good luck!!

Who posts at 4.27am (apart from the Aussies)?

Anyway, your earlier comment about cheesecake....the ones I made yesterday did not contain nuts. I just made the cheesy bit (the best bit!) and put it into little ramekins.

You are doing really well. Great thread :)

Thanks av. Mid induction I made a cheesecake without the base to limit cravings but it just wasn't the same :(

Anyway I've decided to move to phase two and see how I go. Had almonds yesterday....so lovely! And strawbs! Was never fussed about then before.

And btw I crashed out on sofa and when I woke up at 4 then couldn't get back to sleep!!

I've done the fasting diet before diagnosis and once through the first three fasts it was easier but looking back I think I'd rather lose weight this way through eating nice food consistently than every other day.

I liked the feeling of control the fast diet gave me though and it made me realise food wasn't about treat and emotional healing!

Apparently a lot if people combine diets with fasting too and that also works for them x

Debs you are doing brilliantly, and it shows in your morning fasting results. Well done, this diet is suiting you. Keep up the good work!

I was lucky with my weight loss. I had 3 stone to lose, and have now only 3lbs to go to reach target. It has come off gradually at about 1.5lbs a week with no plateaux just by cutting carbs down in stages from 126g a day to my current level of up to 70g a day. My problem now is going to be how to stop losing weight!

Well done, so pleased you are enjoying it.

That's titty!! You've done amazing. I can't imagine what being 3lbs off target must feel like! I can't think about end weight - just taking it 7lbs a time and although it would be fab to let it drop off quickly, I know it's not the best way.

I got some really nice compliments at the school today which was a great boost and definitely keeps me motivated but it is really all about the BG readings as far as I'm concerned. I sometimes wish I had my own lab to run hypothesises through - like is it the losing weight that lowers BG or lack of carbs or both? And what happens when you play about with them.

I wore a skirt yesterday that I'd not worn since before I was pregnant with my first baby who's about to turn six! Stuff like that is just a brilliant measure and so satisfying as I don't really feel any slimmer.

Boobs have shrunk though :( :( ;)

My fasting and pre-meal BG's dropped after I lost 17% of my body weight. I was on 75g of carbs a day at the time. Well done with the skirt! It's great isn't it!

Boobs are just fat, men obviously like fat in certain places lol.

I just wasn't hungry today until just now. Even my fave salad didn't do it for me today. Think the end of school wind up (yep not down!) is distracting me and I feel like I've got a few plates in the air right now which is good for my waistline I guess.

I'm about to eat my first nut ball in over two weeks. I think this could be the highlight of my manic week!!

The kids are driving me insane with their me me me attitude to life and no consideration as to how stressed or busy I am. Been to three different pharmacies to get antibiotics with two moaning brats and no one had them.

I've come home with said brats and they're kicking off yet again.

I wish they'd leave me alone and I could have some peace and quiet. I'm having a meltdown and so are they.

Nothing a tub of half price hagan das wouldn't fix or a pint of Stella but can't bloody do that any more in fear of raising my BG.

I really need a break but no chance of that anytime soon. I'd like to just sit and be - alone and not speak for 24 hours...or even just one hour.

This is too hard. :(
