My blood sugar 1 hour after pancakes was 218. Prediabetes?

Hi Dave,
@Kpop7 has been diagnosed with reactive hypoglycaemia, which in truth does mean she is pre diabetic by definition, if she continues being out of control and continues to still eat the foods that causes the big spikes then the insulin overshoot, which causes a quick drop.
Being RH also means that her fasting Hba1c levels are normal. Her fasting levels should be normal. Unless, she has insulin resistance and too much fat on her organs.
If she has had this condition for a while it is very similar to prediabetes, all the carbs will have an effect on her body, which would raise her levels to above normal.
In UK, they now recommend eating before blood panel tests. This will distort the results of that test, because if it was fasting it would be normal, but say like me she had porridge before the test, the reading would be high, I have had readings in the high teens after two hours. If they test after four hours, the results could be in below normal levels.

Without being conscious of the serious nature of having continuous hypos, the symptoms are no picnic, and are similar to prediabetes and T2.
I finally got my A1C results and my number was 5.4 so that’s good! Like you said, just the reactive hypoglycemia causing big spikes .

You have a chance to restore your control to keep your blood sugar levels normal, as much as possible, by healthy dietary for you. This means no carbs!

Keep safe

This could be your New Year's resolution!

Yes you’re right. And it’s so hard because I love carbs lol but I rather not feel like ****. I’m going to try my best to find as many low carb foods and a I can, and a lot with no carbs. It’ll be hard at first but the more I do it I’m sure It’ll get easier

I understand about the carb cravings. The worse thing you tell someone that they cant have something,. It is a little sick but what happens you want it more because you are not supposed to have it !!!!!!! I still think that people who bring fresh donuts to work are evil and I hate every time I see a pizza commercials on the TV late night. I was in remission once before and thought I was cured and really made a mess of things and second time around I am determined to stay in remission.

An occasional dietary rebellion can be good thing just be smart about it. If you would like to try something that is a little carby just make sure it is small portion to see what happens.

That makes so much sense because when I do cave in and eat sugar and carbs, I DO have a massive craving for more. And it seems harder to stop the more I eat sugar and carbs. Yea I’ll only really eat something carby if it’s a special occasion. I’m going to do a lot of research about what foods are good and what’s not good so I can get better with the diet . Thanks again for your help! :) I hope things are going good with your blood sugar!

That's what I had to do, it took me a few months because I did have the time then and everything that the people on here said about carbs was so true.
The craving comes from the carbs itself fooling the brain to want more glucose because of the amount of insulin in your blood. It's a viscous circle once you start.
I learned that if I started the day with something like porridge, that was it for the rest of the day. I would have to eat, and I would be craving more and more.
But if I don't eat in the morning and fast most of the day, then there was no cravings.
It's the same with your blood sugar levels. You eat carbs you trigger the insulin overshoot and you go hypo. If you don't have carbs, you don't hypo.
That is why it is called carb intolerant. Reactive Hypoglycaemia is a condition where eating healthy foods that don't trigger the reaction. Healthy for you.
By the way, porridge is really bad for me, that is how the specialist knew that it what tests I would need for a diagnosis.
Don't be put off by people who think they know what not eating carbs happens to you.
They don't realise or have knowledge of the condition and how our bodies work different to them.
And keep a food diary, it will help you so much.
And if you get into Keto, your cravings should stop.

When your health is on the line, the first casualty is sugar .... the slightest hint of it makes me retch. Has done for years

That is not me. Anything that is dairy makes me ill, but butter makes me vomit!
Even cream tastes awful. Cheese is like crumbly rubber and makes me baulk.
However as I've said so many times that potatoes are absolutely gorgeous especially chips cooked in beef dripping, but they cause my blood levels to rocket.

Live long and prosper mate!

Keep safe

What’s up guys! It’s been a little while since I’ve talked to y’all. I just wanted to update y’all on something. I recently got blood work done and my endo said that my A1C is normal, my fasting glucose is good and that my body isn’t making any excess insulin. Which is crazy because I still tend to eat poorly a lot. I don’t get that many lows anymore which is good ( I still get some tho) but I think it’s wild that I’m doing better than two years ago lol. I messaged her asking if reactive hypoglycemia can actually go away. What do you guys think? And I really should stop eating poorly because I don’t want to jinx anything or make it come back again.

Hi again!
Good to hear from you and that you are doing better, and that the hypos have eased somewhat.
There is a condition very similar to RH, which has the symptoms of RH but you don't get the hypos, or something similar(again), flat line hypoglycaemia, where you have the symptoms and your blood sugar doesn't spike or hypo.
But as usual only tests can define diagnosis.
Yes stop eating ****.
I have never heard of anyone being cured or that RH has gone away.
Maybe, what you have done already has been sufficient to alter your response to certain foods and has improved your health already.
Your body and hormones adjust all the time and the balance of hormones is critical in the insulin response phase of digestion.
But do watch the carbs.

Hi again, that is the nature of the condition, it never goes away and depending on the day and taking, everything else going on, hormones and stress of modern life, good (very few) bad (quite a few) days will have to be recognised when testing and also eating what is ok for you.
I had to seriously decide if I was going to be pedantic with testing or have an average when repeating food tests, unless it really did spike me high.
For example, I have always eaten baked beans in tomato sauce, and I would usually eat more than an average portion. When it came to testing, if I left any portion with sauce, the spike would be higher the portion size of beans. So I sieved the sauce, and just had the beans, different portion sizes and tested, and repeated testing, but regardless of portion size and sauce, my body would react with a spike and the symptoms. This is what is necessary with your favourite foods, some will be okay, and others won't be. So, my advice is to stick to what you know and if you are not sure, then test, and test again. Some food will surprise you and others are likely to be questioned especially processed production foods. Fresh food is important, meat, protein and vegetables, as are the right fats, how you cook and fats you cook with.
I don't use vegetable oils, they do have an effect on me, and for me, most saturated fat or coconut oil is preferable.
This is an important stage in how you get your nutrition for now and in the future. To maintain health and stop the symptoms. You will get there to a point where it dawns on you like it did for me. The modern diet and recommended by health care is not healthy for me, and probably not for you, and avoiding these foods (carbs) is really good for you.

Stay safe, best wishes.

Thank you so much, I always appreciate everything you say. You explain it all very well! I will do that and continue to test and see what I can and cannot handle. Thanks again! :)
