Hi, I have impaired glucose tolerance. My sugar spikes 1 hour after eating high carb meals. I've decided to stick with the same foods every day. Does this look like a good diet menu. I'll be eating this every day.

Breakfast: 1/4 cup bran flakes, skimmed milk and 1/2 a banana.

Snack: 2 handful of roasted peanuts or 1/4 tub cottage cheese.

Lunch: 2 egg whites, lettuce, 1/2 tomato and 4 slices of thinly cut cucumber.

Snack: 2 handful of roasted peanuts or 1/4 tub cottage cheese.

Tea: Chicken breast or salmon with brocolli and mixed vegetables.

Snack: 2 handful of roasted peanuts or 1/4 tub cottage cheese.

Supper: 1/4 tub non fat natural yoghurt and 1/2 banana in a smoothie.

I also drink sugar free coke throughout the day.

Hiya Sugar Ray,

Well it looks like it's a great low-carb menu for one day, but eating the same thing every day is going to drive you mad won't it? There are plenty of nice low carb things to eat to give you some variety. Sustainability is the key, one of the worst things you can do it stick to the diet for a few weeks before you crack and fall off the waggon.

Bran flakes aren't any good by the way, if you must eat cereal All-Bran is a much better option.

Low-fat yoghurts tend to be higher in carbs than regular "full-fat" varieties. On the same note, egg yolks are good for you, why cut them out?

What's your aim here? To control your blood glucose or to lose weight? In the short term you can lose weight by cutting down on both carbs and fat (and basically eat a low calorie diet), but that isn't a diet that you'll be able to sustain long term.

Hi. I wouldn't choose bananas if you want to keep your sugars down as they can be quite high-GI particularly if ripe. Make sure all the yogurt is sugar free. Yes, eat the whole egg.

+1

Missed that, bananas are pretty evil for diabetics. If you can try and get your fruit fix from berries, which usually have a much lower GI than other fruits.

I enjoy the occasional banana and dont get any huge spikes from them, the best advise as always is to test for yourself, you may find they are not good for your bg levels but you might find you can tolerate them quite well.

Different strokes for different folks :D
