I am using the app to measure my nutrition and have set my goal at 40% carbs thinking if I reach it I can lower it again. Does anyone know if this is still too much or is it a case of suck it and see.

Hi, MyFitnessPal is a great app. As far as your goals, nobody can say. Firstly, 40% on it's own is not enough info really. Do you mean 40% of all food or calories ? Also, no idea how much food you consume. 40% of anything can vary a great deal depending what your 100% is. Keep testing and be guided by your BG levels. If they remain high on 40%, try 35% and so on. Diet is such a personal choice that needs to suit your taste/budget/lifestyle and BG levels. Experiment yourself rather than be guided by others. Good luck, Mo

The percentage is the percentage of calories and the calculations are based on calories eaten.

Mine is set at 25% carbs, 25% protein and 50% fat. . For my calories (1200) this equates to 75g of carbs, 75g protein and 67g fat.

I started with a higher percentage of carbs than that and worked my way down, increasing fat and protein. I daren't go any lower with carbs because I daren't increase my protein any more and I don't want to increase my fat.

Thank you. It was 40% carbs 30% fat and 30% protein. But u are right. I do need to carry on testing as it seems quite personal to individuals. Thank you for replying.

I love MFP app. It's great for checking the nutrient values. I have set my rates at 25% carbs, 25% fat and 50% protein. Saying that, I have just had a sleeve gastrectomy 6 weeks ago so protein is vital for the healing process. I no doubt will change this over time. My carb intake at this rate is about 50g.

Myfitnesspal is a great tool, I'd start at 40% and work down from there see what your meter and energy levels tell you, good luck xxx

That's great to hear This is all very new to me. I set mine at 40% but so far am on 30. See what happens after dinner tonight. Thank you.

Beware MFP seems to overestimate calorie expenditure on exercise. Eg. Swimming breaststroke 30 mins 500+ calories. I don't think so!

They are all member submitted, no scientific basis. I ignore the extra calories earned anyway. I just look at the actual ones. Any earned through exercise is a bonus to me. Mind you, I don't earn many! :(

Thanks. I tend to take my calorie expenditure from map my run app which can be as much as 100 calories less than mfp. But I find mfp better than cals and carbs. We are lucky to have so much help.

Yes I look at that figure because it shows how much you've actually eaten. Like you say the exercise is a bonus. Managed to stay in Single figures all day. Lowest 5.4 highest 8.7 when I got out of bed this morning.

That's brilliant Figgy, and in such a short time. We all struggle with morning fasting levels, many of us record them in a thread "What is your fasting blood glucose in a morning". Join in by all means.

Thank you. Will do. It's great to be part of a group.

Right, but it makes me wonder how accurate the info on calories etc in food is then.

It isn't accurate on the whole. :( It is almost all member submitted, and members are from all over the world. I have never used any of their nutrients without first double checking in Carbs and Cals, on the manufacturers websites, or packaging labels. Then I enter my own submission if I can't find one that compares with my findings. It is also sometimes hard to work out which of the submissions are for cooked weights or uncooked, and if cooked the method of cooking. The vitamins and minerals are rarely completed fully, and are often way out when they are. Having said all that, I still use it. You just have to be careful, and it didn't take very long for me to build up my own personal foods and meals.

Where I can, I scan packaging, to get info directly from a manufacturer, otherwise, I cross check the calorie values, if I think it'll be significant.

As my approach has been to limit carbs, and keep a weather eye on calories, I can't get too paranoid about the odd bit here and there.

Thanks,
I tend not to buy much packaged food, so it probably isn't a problem.

good idea. I do Check as I roughly know mine. But changing my diet atm to cope with diabetes means some things are not in my foods yet. Will keep it in mind.
