Hi
I'm sorry to hear about the wasting musle in your arm, have they offered you any physio to see if they can help to stop it wasting completely. My friend has muscle waste from her Lupus and they have reffered her to see a pain physio at the Royal free, they can't stop what happened but they have given her some gentle exercise to stop it getting any worse. Ask for a second opinion or see another doctor.
Hope all goes well.

Tracey is right... don't allow this to be brushed off or ignored, ask to see a specialist.

Two thoughts that strike me are: to ask if you are on a statin -- there can be side-effects related to muscle breakdown -- and the other is to wonder about neuropathy?

I agree with the contributor if you are on statins. If you are on statins I would suggest you discuss with your GP about stopping or changing them real soon. While for many people they are a good med and don't have side effects e.g. for me, for some they do cause muscle pains and degradation and should be changed to another type or stopped.

thank you for your comments, i am on statins and quite a high dose and have stopped them several times, but each time i have been put straight back on them when i have next blood test....when i next see my specialist, i think this will have to be discussed in detail and see if there is any other option...the neuropathy, well, what can i say. i have both peripheral and autonomic, . .
thanx again ... rob

Rob, I feel for you, I've got both those neuropathies and they suck big time.x Are you sure the muscle wasting isn't down to that?

Rob, I think you need a serious discussion about the statins with your specialist. They are a well-known cause of muscle aches/wastage is some people and the leaflet in the statin packet will say this. Statins tend to be given automatically to people with db regardless of cholesterol level. I had to ask my GP to halve my prescription as my tests showed I didn't need the high level prescribed and my readings are still good with the lower level. The most common and cheapest statin, Simvastatin, is apparently more prone to the muscle problems so an alternative statin might be better?

hi everyone
i am sure it could be down to the neuropathies, but i am so confused at the moment over it all.when my muscle first went in my arm, i was told it was because i had used that area for an injection site.a few months down the line and both my hands have lost muscle, thing is i have been seeing a specialist every 4 months for my duypuytrens and he never said a word.it seemed to disappear over days rather than weeks, and now its my calf.
the statins,i was on simvastatin for several years, but then (i will explain it the way i was told) i needed to go on the high dose of atorvastatin straight away because apparently statins work in 2 ways, the one way is for the heart and simvastatin wasnt doing that job.
its this reason why whenever i have come off it as soon as a blood test is done i am put straight back on it.
i think all this confusion is caused by specialist keeping me completely in the dark and because of that i now have very serious complications

a bit of advice for any one reading this no matter what stage of diabetes you have, make your doctor explain in detail all the serious complications of this awful disease, mine didnt and because of that i have no life due to those 'serious complications' that may have been avoided.

Just read all your comments concerning muscle wastage in arms and legs. Last month I visited doctor because I have had pain in upper part of left arm. Started back in April, (cannot ID a reason for it) at the time very mild, on and off (nothing that couldn't be lived with), through the summer months more activity and more painful. Any sudden movement with arm, pain is sharp, makes me feel faint and sick. When pulling jumper off over head with pain shooting from under arm across left side of chest this I thought was enough, took a while to ease off. I saw the doc, told to take paracetamol every day for 4wks, I did, then went back as no change, request sent off for physio. Unable to sleep on that side if arm is aligned with body (must be bent upward to pillow and out from body for any slight comfort) in the night I obviously lay on it and the pain wakes me, any pressure put on muscle causes pain. Have checked symptoms on NHS website in hopes of finding something that I can do to eleviate problem, it could be tendonitis but don't know what would have caused that, anyway, at present bottom line the 'actual' problem hasn't been identified. I pointed out to doctor my concern with taking statins as far as I know the 'problem' could be made worse by them if I don't get it sorted out. This is now running into the 6th wk waiting for apptmt letter to come through for physio dept. I don't want to pester the docs surgery because they have done their bit by requesting an apptmt, seems like these things can be a long wait though.

Grum sounds as though you may have a frozen shoulder there..

I've got two of the demons, low level ache most of the time, loss of mobility in the arm, pin's and needles etc.. And when you move slightly wrong and kick it into a spasm it's a sickening pain akin to break your arm..

With Frozen shoulder it's a waiting game, as the go into the freeze then come out again can take a couple of years, and about all you can do take pain killer, physio to help mobility loss, sometimes steriod injection can help, and you can have it manipulatated under a GA..

@ Rob

What is your diabetic control like?

As running high levels can cause muscle wastage..

Definitely sounds like a Frozen Shoulder to me Grum, but I'm no doctor.
If it's diagnosed as that by the physio, my recommendation would be to have manipulation under a GA. The symptoms are caused by thickening of the lining of the shoulder joint - normally the material that lines the joint is very thin and slippery but it can thicken up to 10mm which is when the mobility is limited and it's very painful.
The pain can go away if it is left but it can take up to two years and the mobility is permanently impaired.

If manipulation doesn't work then a shoulder surgeon can cut away some of the material in the joint lining. In my case, the surgeon actually booked it as manipulation with the potential for surgery, but didn't need to do the surgery in the end.

For Rob, you have my sympathy for all that will do. I don't understand why the doctor has stated that you need to be on statins. Are your cholestrol levels really that bad?

Thanku Rob and Steve for your replies, very helpful.
It crossed my mind it may be 'frozen shoulder' (the assumption being it would be the shoulder not the upper muscle area) However, between you the description is reading correct, it's become difficult to raise arm to do hair, anything where the action isn't smooth and non straining of the area and I've noticed slight pain in shoulder more recently. I guess two yrs is on the cards then (or more)!
Statins - I am already taking (that was my concern) family history dictates my usuage, asprin and BP tablets (following high BP when working resulted in deafness (blood vessel damage between brain and ear) diabetic control is kept under 7.0mmol (I do checks - never suggested I should).
Recent Retinopathy check outcome good. After retiring from an office job (sitting)I walk alot now. Grum

statins mate, I outright refuse to take them see my gp last week, all was fine, she even said that my liver function test had changed for the better, I told her I did not take the statins, as they completly crippled me, her reply was that they also affect the liver, she has now reffered me to a consultant, who hopefully will find a statin that will not affect me or my liver, but they are dearer, hence the consultant has no problem prescribing them, then there are people who take them with no side affects whatsoever

Hi
I have been on a number of statins, Atorvastatin was the worse, it crippled me. I was doing tests for Rheumatoid Arthritis because I was in so much pain. I struggled to walk at one bit. I also had raised liver enzymes and they did some sort of test and said my it was doing nasty things to my muscles ,so I came off it sharpish.
Tried another couple ,sorry cant remember their name  but they did similar but not as bad.
I was going to give up ,but I have Hyperlipodemia so need statins.
I am now on Rosuvastatin 40 mg and also Ezetimibe 10 mg, neither give me any problems at all, no raised enzymes ,no aches and the the best labs I've had...so it is worth persevering if you really need them.
Diet and exercise can only do so much for me, as it is my Liver that is at fault but if you can do it without Statins I would.

The type of statin is important. Artovarsatatin did not work for me- ask GP about Rosuvastatin seems to be working for me - a lot less muscle pain and better muscle definition. i believe it is more expensive but do not be fobbed off- GP makes money out of you as well!
