Just got back from my first Crossfit workout in ages, and I'm still standing!
Tomorrow's another day, mind!

Wall stretches
Hollow rocks
Dead bugs

Cindy
3 rounds of (5 pullups, 10 pushups, 15 squats)

Previous best was 52.5kg but only managed 42.5kg due to sore wrists. :(

WOD (workout of the day)

10 x toes to bar (I scaled to hanging knee raises)
10 x kettlebell swings (I scaled to 12kg)

I did 4 full rounds plus 5 k/b swings.

I think I'm gonna be sore tomorrow.
Back for more on Wednesday!

:D Steve

Re: Crossfit WODs

"Sore tomorrow"!!!!!!!! Good grief Steve I'm knackered already just from reading what you have done. You sure don't take any prisoners do you? :D

Seriously though, well done.

I agree, flippin' 'eck I would be dead after 2 minutes.

Steve, I am SO impressed with your absolute tenacity. Your determination to kick this thing into the background as much as you can. I can only look on in awe and say well done!

Re: Crossfit WODs

Hah! Thanks guys. :D

With the help of the meds, I feel I can now take proper control of my fitness.
In retrospect I feel as though I was fighting a losing battle before, so in many ways I'm glad of the (albeit late) diagnosis.
The deck's stacked in my favour now and the encouragement from you guys makes me even happier, so thank you again. :D

Just had a hot soak after the workout and I'm riding the endorphins. Feel great! 8)

Keep it up, you can only progress further and further. I think a long hot soak is well deserved.

Dude, you need to be soaking in an ice bath after that sort of workout. I just finished a 9 mile run, that wasn't nearly as painful as 20 mins in a 15 degree C bath. I find it helps though. It's also supposed to help weight loss through "cold thermogenesis"...

Cross Fit is pretty mental, my boss keeps showing me scary videos of people in his gym. I've noticed Robb Wolf, Mark Sissons and others in the Paleo crowd turning their back on Cross Fit because it is sooooo extreme and, in their opinion, not sustainable.

Great work man.

Stephen

Re: Crossfit WODs

Cheers Stephen :D

CF at the top firebreathing level is pretty gruesome (although athletes like Spealer might disagree  ) but for fat forty-somethings like me it's all scaled down to human levels. You certainly get encouraged to work outside your comfort zone, but the strength and stamina gains are really impressive.

It's the best workout I've ever had and I've boxed, Thai boxed and British Military Fitness'ed in the past.

Don't be put off by your boss if you fancy a go, you certainly won't be expected to get sub-5 minute Fran times or anything  , and the community of athletes of all ages and abilities is really encouraging!

9 miles is an ace distance to run! I'm just working my way through C25K again on my off days and then will be progressing to 10K as I want to take part in charity runs and such.

Cheers again,
:) Steve

Hah! Didn't look right as I typed it.
I'm getting there thanks.
I had serious DOMS all last week again but I think my body's getting the idea again now.
I'll be back up to steam in a few weeks.
That unassisted hanging pull-up's getting closer... 8)

5 rounds of:

It might have been a hero workout but I only managed it in 15 mins 22 sec with a 30kg bar. Maybe 35kg next time. :D

I used my new Polar FT2 to get an accurate picture of how hard I worked, and I was quite surprised.
65 minutes of exercise at an average HR of 139, max HR 173 during heavy lifts.
I used the Journal of Sports Sciences formula to calculate the calories burned and it came out at 1014.65! :D

Here's my BTW log for the shoulder press, and the DT WOD. :)

Here's my BtW log for today.

Steve,
Can you give an explanation of cross fit for the uninitiated. I've tried to read some of the sites but the jargon is to me incomprehensible!
For the record I'm a 60 year old T1 female who has enough stamina to run a slow (5h+) marathon but the rest of my fitness programme consists of pilates and some relatively heavy gardening .

I'd love to phoenix, but I don't want to sound like I'm advertising it or anything - I just love it so much!

It's basically a mix of olympic weightlifting, circuit training and gymnastics. It's designed for elite forces and top athletes but is easily scaled down for the likes of me by using lighter weights or less repetitions. We use bodyweight, dumbbells, kettlebells, skip ropes, climbing frames, tractor tyres and loads of other things to exercise with but the main weapon of choice is the olympic barbell.

After your induction that takes you through all the technique and safety you never know what you're going to get thrown at you until you get through the door and the coach writes it on the whiteboard. It's usually some kind of warm-up followed by a weights-related or bodyweight technique practice after which you get to try to break your previous personal best. The workout of the day follows this and it's a hellish mix of lifting and aerobic exercise in a circuit style, whether it be a number of rounds timed, as many rounds as possible in a set time or something completely random!

There are a number of benchmark workouts named after hurricanes, the most famous of which is Fran. I'll come back to that at the end. There are also many 'hero' workouts named after fallen soldiers. You don't want to see one of those on the board! :D

It's designed by Greg Glassman and it centres around strength coming from the hips and the techniques nearly all revolve around this, especially when lifting heavy. There are some really strong girls that are just little slips of things, disproving the myth about lifting making women bulky! Of course blokes are more disposed to building muscle and this is an excellent way of going about it. I've been back a few weeks after a long break and my triceps are starting to pop nicely.
Many of the lifts are designed to strengthen and condition the core muscles and any weakness in this area is soon highlighted when you start to squat with a heavy barbell over your head. You want strong, firm abs? Heavy squats are the way to go!

There's no lycra, mirrors or TV's in the gym (box) and it's all about getting the best out of yourself and helping others to do the same. Whatever your fitness level you'll get your donkey kicked every time. The sense of community is fantastic and it's really encouraging to be cheered on by totally ripped firebreathers, mid-rangers and fat beginners like myself.

That's a rough personal overview but I'm happy to answer anything else about it in my limited experience. There's also http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/faq.html in case you want more info.

My current dream goal is to do one of these at the prescribed weight in under 10 minutes!

Crossfit also promote two diets "Paleo" and "the Zone", both of which are very diabetic firendly.

Obviously "Paleo" is an approximation of our ancesteral diet, "the Zone" is focused on hormonal control - principally insulin, glucagon and icosanoids (which control inflammation).

I'm going to wait and see if Steve dies. If he doesn't, I might have a go in the winter when it's too cold to run.

I'm surprised he isn't dead already, the amount of calories he burns is out of this world. I really admire his tenacity. Walking is quite enough for me, but I really am impressed with his determination!

I have a fiver on him not making it to the end of the Olympics...
