My parents won't listen to me about low carb

Cholesterol is good
Hb1Ac - is fine - depends on what you want. I like to keep mine below 6. Don't know about thyroid!!

Hi big-daddy, hope all is going well for you. I personally feel that your HbA1c could be a little lower but it really isn't too bad. As for Thyroid function, TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) should be 0.4 - 4.5 so that looks ok to me.

You'll probably have to do your own thing and let them see you succeed. your comment about the yogurt chimes with me. The amount of sugar in yogurt makes my blood boil. look out some whole milk yogurt and add berries to it. It's hard without your family's support, but you CAN do it.

Fage fat free or their full fat Greek yogurt are good alternatives to other yogurts which are low fat but loaded with sugar. As for your parents, Try suggesting certain foods which would be better for you, lower in sugar therefore helping to reduce your blood sugar levels etc, go shopping with them and show them what to look for on the labels. Failing that, do your own shopping. When at home if they give you a sandwich just take the top slice of bread off and eat the rest (as an open sandwich). Good luck!

Couldn't say what your thyroid or cholesterol readings mean but your hba1c could do with being a little lower if you can reduce it. It's generally recommended that you try to keep your hba1c below 6% (42mmol) I think. Slow and steady changes you can make and stick to tend to work best. I try to eat little but often, I'm a type 2, diet controlled diabetic for the past 8 years and trying my best to keep off meds!

My parents are now on board with me low carbing and losing weight. My dad is actually trying to get me off from drinking beer, juice and fizzy drinks because of the sweetener aspartame after he watched a programme about it and he now wants to me drink tea (black or with milk), water (sparkling or still) with slices of lemon and lime and a limited amount of wine and spirits.

I have also started to plan a low carb shopping list for buying at Tesco's which I will post in a couple of days as I may need some advice on what to take out and put in. I also have been referred to this programme for when I start at Derby University http://www.b-you.co.uk/. Also I am getting a new meter after my doctor at Derby Uni and my temporary doctor in stoke had a argument about test strips and meters for type 2's.

We all know here that health professionals can have very different views but it usually comes as a surprise when people witness it for the first time. See how the medical students behave in the union bar. Think that one day, some poor pilgrim will go see one of them hoping for the best advice possible. What are his chances of getting it?

You're learning all the time and making progress. Make yourself your own expert next. Chances are if one doctor gives you the OK, another one will think that you are being irresponsible. Read, learn, experiment. And, by the way, if you learn to cook from raw ingredients, no sauces in pots, jars or cans, you'll eat better, have more nutritious food of the right sort and you'll save money too.

Just to say Good Luck, big-daddy at Uni and low carbing in the future, so glad that your parents have now come around x
