My partner has just been diagnosed type2

Hiya, my partner was diagnosed type 2 diabetes 2 weeks ago.
Shock was the first reaction, but it did explain a lot of things!
He had a blood sugar reading of 21. fasted overnight and another test was done and it went down to 17.4
we were told to follow a healthy eating plan, which we followed religiously.
The chemist then did another test a week later and the reading was 19.4 was told to fast again and went back for another test next am....still 19.4 was told to go back to the doctor.
we did. after a lot of discussion he referred us to a diabetic nurse who took tests then prescribed metformin.
took one tablet that night....stuck to diet
second day took another tablet ( no side effects) stuck to diet, two hours after evening meal, could not keep my partner awake, so I suggested we took a reading ...it was 31.2
we were scared, didnt know what this meant. rang out of hours doctor who said to go up hospital immediately, we did, saw doctor, examined Roger, took urine sample ( trace of keytones only) told us to up the metformin.
we have done this today and felt bit better.
Since reading all the posts here I wonder if its the carbs doing this.
In following the healthy eating sheet the doctor gave us we have significantly increased our carbs...
should we cut these right down?

we've had a scary weekend and don't want it to happen again....just want to get this thing under control....

any help please! :(

Hi Jacque and welcome to the forum.Have you tried reducing the amount of carbs that he is eating ? Try cutting down the portions of bread ,potatoes ,pasta and rice and see if this has an affect on his blood sugars.These complex carbs are converted 100% into glucose in the body and are responsible for making your blood sugars go up alarmingly.
Please try cutting down on the carbs ,especially the ones I have mentioned and see what effect that has over the weekend.

I will do that.
i did wonder, because that is the major change we made...building up carbs and dropping sugar.
thats what the healthy eating sheet the nurse gave us suggested, but i think you are right...its too many carbs..
how do I fill him up tho, he's adament he NEEDS all his food!
Saw the doctor again this am and he said he must get it uder control or he will have to have insulin, we dont want to go there if we can help it.

Have a look round the food forum ,there are some good recipes there.Read the low carb forum as well.It has good tips for 'fillers' .I would suggest just reducing a bit just now to see if it makes a difference.

I'm also a T2, personally I found cutting out as much carb as possible got my BG numbers down - you replace the carb with protein/fat/vegetables but you don't need as much as it fills you up more.
One your partners BG is down to reasonable BG levels you can experiment with food to see what he can eat without spiking his BG reading.

Hi Jac,
The usual DUK ( diabetes UK) healthy eating diet says eat plenty of complex carbs. When you try to pin them down, they tell you "plenty" doesn't mean "loads". However it is just those complex carbs which push the BGs up.
I personnally eat very little of them, just what's un green leaves ( salads) and a very little fruit.
I find a bag of ready prepared salad in the fridge and some cold meats a life saver. Quick to eat and filling.
I now use raspberry vinegar, a little salt and olive oil to dress my leaves. It's delicious and the bit of sugar in the vinegar doesn't matter much if you don't eat a lot of it.

hi there.....

I was much the same as your partner, but after listening to the advice on here it made a tremendous difference........ try low GI foods they reakky are great...... my biggest problem was the hunger so this is what i did.......( im on metformin 0

Breakfast:

Slice of Burgen Bread or sometimes 2 with olive type spread flora or what ever u fancy
2 pieces of crispy microwaved bacon and a boiled egg or 2

snack appple pear or kiwi friut

lunch : tuna fish type main with with mushrooms peppers onion salad etc etc,,, remember your free vegs........
then a muller light or similar

snack ... digestive rich-tea friut or similar

evening meal .chicken red meat maybe a few small pots or brown rice that sort of stuff

few pieces of fruit etc .

anyway it worked for me .but everyone is different, you need to experiment and test test test.... oh yes .i found cereals put me sky high including porridge and oats etc

Remember its not just the sugar content it the carb content to watch too !!!
It is do-able , just hang in there wishing you luck

I am now into my fourth week anniversary, and although I have not seen the dietician (another 6 week wait) I have started to work my own way.

When I was diagnosed, I was tending to be between 11 & 13.

I was told to eat rice, pasta etc, but read a lot on these forums. Although I do not think I am capable of being 'lo carb' I have virtually cut out pots, rice and pasta, and am checking the carb content on everything.

the best thing I have found to snack on is nuts, cucumeber with humouse, and there are hartley jellies.

I have also found that I can stomach Green and Blakcs 8%% chocolate.

I am missing some foods, especially as I am on the road most of the day.

Cheeses are also very low in Carb.

The other thing I have been told is to excercise. I was already a member of a gym, but not giving it priority, although, I am now.
