We have Sparrows here, they are a pest and full of lice. Our Magpies keep them away most of the time but they come back. Magpies rinse and repeat. :D

Sometimes I forget how beautiful the "common" sparrow is, here he has snatched a piece of bread out of the wood pigeon's grasp @liam1955 will love this one
You're right, Anna - I think we got so used to seeing sparrows years ago that we forgot they really are very pretty little finches. Rare nowadays, too - they're actually on the RSPB's endangered Red list (in serious decline over the past 50 years), which is a great shame because they are such wonderful characters. We have a couple of nesting pairs who visit our garden and we feel very blessed to have them!

We are also blessed in the variety of birds visiting our garden. We also have the sparrowhawks, who unfortunately think of our garden as their personal buffet

Yes, we have the same problem. Breaks my heart every time I see them take a bird, especially in the Spring, when I think there may be orphaned chicks in a nest somewhere, waiting for a meal which will never come. :(
But I tell myself that sparrowhawks have to eat too...
I just wish they were vegetarians,

G:)ood morning all these are a couple of pics from the lake at the bottom of my road . :)

How lovely! You are so lucky to have this on your doorstep, Arlene - I'll bet the grandchildren love feeding those ducks and geese! :)

Yes they do especially my youngest granddaughter she feeds them 2-3 times a week. :)

Fab - lucky kids (and ducks)! Mine adore feeding the ducks, although as far as Lily (the littlest one) is concerned, it's more a case of throwing the bread AT the ducks rather than to them! And she has no idea whatsoever where it's going to land when she throws it (behind her, more often than not!). LOL :joyful:

Well, it's going to be a long while before I get any great-grandchildren as my oldest granddaughter is only 4, but I know what you mean. (You must have started very young!)

Evening everyone, I went to Greenham Common today, it was such a beautiful walk and I managed to take some photo's, a couple are my particular favourites. I hope you enjoy them too :)

Amazing pictures Robs - you have got some sharp eyesight to spot all those little creatures! I love the fact that nature's all around us, but it's not until you stop and really focus that you notice any of it.
My favourite is the little black and red moth on the thistle - I think it's 6-Spot Burnet moth, and I think the stripey caterpillar is from a Cinnabar moth. And the last picture is lovely, too. I think that one's a Small Heath butterfly.
Gorgeous!

The native Virginia Hibiscus starting blooming. They are dark red, a kind of swamp rose mallow, about nine inches across blooms

Lately, we still have the occasional ravens, a lot of sparrows, various sorts of finches, our resident two families of cardinals and some of the monarchs are here

Nothing much edible is growing except chocomint, the gooseberries were few as were the blueberries earlier, and the poddling radishes are finished. Our few onions were very woody and I have ignored the portulaca. No squashes, no corn no peppers no anything. No bees, only native tiny bees and bumblebees but there are still about a dozen pomegranates that survived a very bad winter and this yer will be a banner amount of wild quinces, though tiny, a bit larger than crabapples
Why do you think there's been such a poor harvest, Galja?

Thank you, I was amazed at all the small wildlife, it's the first time I had been to Greenham Common. When I looked at the photo's, I was really chuffed with them and my favourite's are the moth's and the spider and thank you for putting names to the creatures :)

Enjoyed our walk in the woods today we enjoyed the wildlife at the loch including Mr Heron who was on the path in front of usDSCF4585.JPG

I took this pix of a Goanna when our kids were younger, and their first time camping out "bush" at Sunday Gully near Mt Isa in the late 1970's.
