Need advice please

ok so I seem to be doing ok controlling my blood sugar with low carb high fat diet, everything seems hunky dory except my cholesterol has gone up to 5.8 and the drs has put me on Atorvastatin, I am unsure whether I need them and I’ve heard statins are bad. Before I was diagnosed with diabetes last March my cholesterol was always good (in the4s) any advice would be greatly appreciated xx

My advice is to analyse the breakdown. The total cholesterol is just that - the total of the good and the bad.
Do you have the breakdown? (HDL/LDL/triglycerides) and was it a fasting test?

If you have lost weight then that will have raised your cholesterol levels - it is part of a perfectly natural process and as there is very little information about what is a natural level of cholesterol for Humans from before low fat was the way to eat, I remain skeptical.
There was a revolt against taking statins in France at one point - there was to be an elevation in the death rate from heart attack and strokes, according to the medical profession - and indeed there was an alteration in the death rate - it went down by about the same amount as the predicted rise. Until that can be explained, I'd rather be on the side of the living statin free than being treated for something which is made more likely by the treatment.

I’ve lost nearly 5 stone x

I have had the threat of statins for over fifteen years because of my family history.
I've tried them, there was too many side effects.

This was before I read all the information especially on this forum.
Even though the debate is still relative, the best advice I got was from my latest named GP. He told me to forget family history because I have a rare condition and they didn't. I have normal blood glucose levels and I have a hba1c level in normal range, my BP, liver and kidney function tests were normal, in other words I had got my health in reality good control.
However my one before last tests my cholesterol like yours was a little higher than normal. But that was because of my weight loss and stable blood levels.
Another doctor suggested statin s. Er, no thanks!
I've read that statin s are great for those who have heart conditions already diagnosed but unnecessary for those who haven't. I've read that cholesterol has nothing to do with what you eat! We need good cholesterol and the idea behind low carb is that despite an initial increase, it does come back down.
The debate rages!

In my opinion, and my experience, I would swerve them unless it is really essential.
I don't think you do! But I may be wrong!

Best wishes.
