Need New Pen

I live in Chorlton Manchester. I asked my doctor to prescribe me a new meter and a new pen and she told me that they do not prescribe these and I need to see a diabetes specialist to get these prescribed. Is this true?

Not as far as I am aware.

My GP prescribes pens for me and quite a lot of peopke on this site get pens from their GP.

I would speak to DSN about new meter or get a free one online.

But Type 2s aren't usually given meters to save the NHS money, but some GPs do give prescriptions if you are on medication. But that seems to vary from practice to practice.

Its the pen in particular that I need as I think that the one I have may be malfunctioning.

Well I think you should be given testing stuff if you are Type 1. I'm Type 2 so don't get that. I expect some Type 1s will be along soon to give you more advice.

Well it's true that a diabetes clinic can give you both, but pens are also prescribed by your gp and bg meters can be obtained for free if you ring the meter manufacturers, just be sure to tell them you test multiple times a day.

Hi, I hope you can get a pen asap as you do need it !! I asked for a back up pen in case of a malfunction and I ended up with one pack of Insulin vials my GP got it wrong. Then I asked again, the pharmacy told me that my 1/2 unit pen was no longer in use. Eventually my dsn at the GP surgery, prescribed two 1/2 unit Echo pens for me.

GP should be prescribing...I had a similar problem last week and contacted the clinic who told that any prescriptions need to be dealt with by GP...if you get really stuck you can ask the clinic to write a letter to your GP

Your GP can and should prescribe pens. Mine certainly does.

My GP prescribes single use pens and insulin, but I got my reuseable pens from my DSN at the hospital - she has a stock which are given to her by the manufacturers - can you try and get a pen from them? Whoever makes the insulin you use?

I have to admit that I have only ever asked my DN... which is separate to my docs - I have rung them up before today and had a testing kit waiting for me 1 hour later, Your DN may also be able to give you a pen - mine provided me with a new pen within minutes when I suggested I wanted better insulin control. My doctors will issue a prescription for a pen, now.

My pen wasn't working properly so I spoke to the diabetic clinic who said the doctors will prescribe. I put in a request with the doctor and got a call 5 mins later saying go to the chemist. I went to the chemist who said yes we can get you one but without a prescription we'll have t charge you near £50. I went back to the doctors who said we can't go speak to the diabetic team. Needless to say I was piggy In the middle because the doctors didn't want to pay. Anyway the diabetic team called and got the doctor to issue a prescription. After that one was signed the receptionist put in another prescription so I could have a spare pen.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

My GP prescribes my pens (re-useable ones). I just say what pen I need and it gets put in my repeat prescription with my insulin and test strips, etc.

The diabetic team are a great support in times of need!!! As you say they really support us especially with prescriptions

All this talk about pens..

The device for administering insulin should be on repeat prescription. It's also advisable (by the sensible health professionals.) to make sure you have a "spare" in case of malfunction or breakage..
