If you've only just gone back on meds it can take a few days. Keep testing and recording. If levels stay high, contact your healthcare team for assistance.

According to some tests I carried out on myself last summer it can take a few days for the body to respond to a new diet. I found I had a tendency to think of the last thing I ate as the be all and end all of my blood sugars. I now have formed the theory that while the food progresses through my gut I may be reaping the benefits of yesterdays meals.

Anyway, my tests involved no carbs in the evening and testing first thing in the morning. The morning readings came down a little each day but took anything up to 4 or 5 days to bottom out.

hi i havent gone back on the meds as they made me quite ill and i have tried a few different ones now they gave me really good control bt not so good in stomach area. thanks i will stay on the low carbs for a few days and see if it does even itself out thanks for your replys

Hi. What meds are you on? If Metformin hopefully they are now the SR (Slow Release) version which avoids most stomach problems. What is your weight and age? If young'ish and not overweight you need to eliminate the small possibility of a T2 mis-diagnosis

Hi was on metformin and gliglizide then both together ive tried slow release they made me sick im 42 i was 13 stone 8 and now 10 stone 7 dnt think it was a mis diagnosi as wen checked myfasting level was 15.5 and also had the usual symptoms ive had really bad stomach to the point i ended up in A&E ive tried a few different tablets and they work for me but after about 2 months i start to get the problems been to see my gp who thinks i can control it with diet bt i am getting high levels after breakfast and they stay like that all day till the morning

Hi Cath

Well done on the weight loss .If you are able to exercise that will bring down your levels too and the effect of exercise can last days rather than hours, so worth the extra effort.

Give it a week or so with the diet at least.

Good luck
Cara

Hi cara thanks for ur reply i am exercising aswell and will keep up with the diet as i shudnt expect to much all at once justz searching for low carb snacks to munch on in the afternoon

Atkins bars help my chocolate cravings, there is one just like Bounty!
I've also just made up 4 sachets of Weight Watchers sugar free jelly

I love them atkins bars haha iive seen them and also found some 10cal jelly today was really nice may try the atkins as a treat if i do well at the end ov the week

Sugar free jelly all the way!! No Sugar, no fat - tasty, guilt free afternoon treat :)

EDIT - 'Hartleys' sugar free jelly is only 6kcal a pot and has just 1.2g of carbs and comes in three lovely flavours (strawberry, raspberry and orange).

Hi. Thanks for the age and weight info. It's great that you have lost so much weight. The reason I asked for more info is that a small proportion of those diagnosed as T2 are actually Late onset T1. I'm not saying that's what you are but if you get to a very good BMI, have a low-carb diet and still have high blood sugar then that possibility increases. If so then you need to talk to the GP about moving on to insulin which may be the only med left for you as the tablets give you problems. I've been on insulin for a year and it is easy, manages blood sugar well and actually doesn't cost the NHS that much. So, see where you get to after a month or so and do ask the GP for insulin if needed.

hi thanks for the reply i have spoken to my GP about insulin he did want to try me on another tablet but after the bad stomach problems i said no way was i trying any more as i had tried enough he said he was going to try me on diet and exercise i have to go for blood test next month and he will see from there and will send me to a diabetic clinic if need be i will see how i go on the low carb diet as when i checked my level last night it was 5.0 and this morning it was 5.9 so not bad readings

hi i have just started on a low carb diet only yesterday so yesterday i has bacon eggs and tomatoes for breakfast rivita low fat cheese spread and ham for lunch i had cheese strings and low cal jelly in afternoon and stew for tea i was really supprised at my level last night i thought it would be higher it was 5.0 but i did do half hour on treadmill ,this morning level was 5.9 i had same again for breakfast today i have jus checked my level again 2 hours later and its 8.3 which is not bad .....is 100 carbs or less a day a good level to stick to

That's looking good. There is a lot of debate and difference of opinion on levels of carbs and it really is a personal decision. Some recommend about 30g which is very low. I keep mine below 125g but that works for me.

Keep testing and keep records of food intake and readings and you will see a pattern that will help you to decide where your level should be.
