Pasta, sorry to me it's vile, yeuch lol (and full of nasty carbs)
Is it me or are the media (mostly right wing entities) painting us Type 2's up as obese, lazy and are always chomping on pizzas and chocolates. The other day when NICE said it was issuing criteria for gastric-band operations all I heard was a wave of negativity on radio call-ins and ignorant presenters who host these shows like LBC breakfast.
All I can say it is rubbing off on me, not bothered though but I know more vulnerable people would be upset by this.

I think it also makes NHS cuts in funding for diabetes easier if Joe Public thinks it's all our own fault and we're a waste of money. There is also a huge amount of press coverage on lazy scroungers who won't get a job so there is no uproar when benefits are cut ! The Gov't spins it's web ! You don't hear much in the news about the 11% pay rise for MP's lol ! Well, that's my opinion anyway.

The thing is, if you believe that conventional diet guidelines (high carb, low fat) are healthy, then you don't believe that anyone following those guidelines will become type 2.

So type 2s can't be eating healthily, and it MUST be their fault.

That thinking seems soooo reasonable, until you realise that its founding principle (high carbs and low fat is good) is total nonsense and is what is CREATING type 2s.

Its tragic. But it is also unavoidable until the Eatwell Plate and high carb diet advice is finally buried - and that is going to take decades...

- also, I'm a type 2, and since sausages, English breakfasts, cream and butter are on my menu, if the public see me eating them in cafés, they are going to think 'fat pig, no wonder she is fat!' When the reality is that this diet is actually making me lose weight. :woot:

An epidemic caused by the big corporations?
Blame the victims.
Seven hundred a day going down with it.
The true figure will be much much higher than that because many people don't bother going to the doctors.
700 a day is quite a frightening figure.
Those jumping on the bandwagon of putting us down might be in for a big shock the way this thing is progressing.

It could lead to people failing to go to their GPs for fear of being stigmatised, also GPs tend to think slim people don't get diabetes and are therefore overlooked. Negative propaganda will make it easier to cut medication, they are already talking about cutting radical treatment to those over 70, so if you are mature you wont get the meds you need and if your feet go bad and drop off, well, just tough ! ! ! Not good. Trouble is the Eat Well Plate primes people to become insulin resistant, once insulin resistant then the weight will creep on, then its a case of 'Oh, you are overweight, you got diabetes, and its your fault because you ate rubbish and pigged out', well, actually no, just followed the government guidelines and ate what they told me to. Very sad situation.

Truth be told diabetes is going to scrutinized by the govt due to the numbers diagnosed now. We will be targets soon for budget cuts and rationing soon:(

For sure!
Our owners won't want us costing them any more.

It's all boils down to cash as usual and diabetes is taking up a bigger slice of the cake now, when I was younger there was maybe one or two diabetics in your school but now just like asmtha and allergies these conditions are on the rise and will cost billions to treat. I waited 3 months for a referral that was marked URGENT to see a consultant to start insulin therapy.

It wouldn't surprise me if, unless on some type of benefits, our free prescriptions will go within the next few years. Really hope not but diabetes is becoming an epidemic and could end up bankrupting the NHS. The Gov't is putting the groundwork in now, lots of negative publicity.

Right on Mo1905....viva la revolution....no more stigmatising us diabetics. Time we found a voice and fought for our rights. If we do nothing they (whoever you think be it the govt etc) will eat away at our rights, dignity and damage our health and our wealth (if you've got any dough lol).

Kimbo, time I got my bandanna off and stopped my Citizen Smith stuff and had my dinner lol lol....hope people keep the mood and pulse of the diabetic community posted.:)

It wouldn't surprise me either, but the NHS criteria for free prescriptions has always seemed arbitrary to me. I've been asthmatic since childhood and in the mid 70's could easily have died after one very severe attack. If I don't take my daily medicines I might well end up in hospital yet asthmatics don't get free prescriptions. For more years than i care to remember I have paid for an annual 'ticket' thus fixing the cost I have to pay for my prescriptions to a known amount no matter how often I need medicines.

Hi Bru
Watching that program on TV and the one concerning drug resistant bacteria moved me to write to my local MP . i said to her that we should rather spend money on Bacteriophage research and that the NICE diabetes diet is, at best, only diabetes neutral and at it worst it contributes to the disorder. She said my letter would be passed on to the Minister for Health.

It's to allow public sentiment to build, through ignorance.
So that Gov't can look good and to justify the cuts they want to make.
You just have to remember this in the next election.
After all, there are a lot of Diabetic people in the UK.
Hopefully it'll all implode on the Govt at this time ;)
Election!!!
If voting changed things it would illegal!

It's also worth noting that diet-controlled diabetics don't get free prescriptions, while diabetics on medication or insulin get all their prescriptions free, yet people with cancer get only their cancer-related prescriptions free. And diabetics get free eye tests but not free dentistry, although diabetes is known to cause dental problems. Truly arbitrary.

To tell you the truth the whole free prescriptions issue is a minefield of morals over who is entitled to what. Everyone in Scotland here gets free scripts regardless of income, age or illness. No doubt this wont last forever though, wishfull thinking of a utopia here. However when the cuts are even considered the first to have their exemptions revoked will be Type 2 diabetics on oral meds that will either have to pay for their no diabetes related prescriptions or will have no exemption at all.

Hi eddie 1968
I agree they are really having a go at us for being T2 and it makes me so angry. I can't listen to them on the news or read the papers. Not everyone who is T2 is obese and not everyone who is obese has T2. If I was obese I would not consider a gastric-band operation as it often comes with complications which can be worse than living with T2. Some vulnerable people could feel pushed into having this operation when they would rather not.
