Neuropathy extreme pain, other types of meds ect

Hi, i've been a T2Insulin diabetic for 10 years now. and have had neuropathy in both feet for quite some time, been on amitriptyline, gabapentin, lycra ect. nothing has worked.
last night was i think the worst night of my diabetic life with extreme shooting pains so bad i thought i was going mad.
i know they say desperation breeds insanity but lately with nights like this i have been considering other meds that the dr cant/wont give me for pain relief.

does anyone else have neuropathy this bad and feel like your doctor just does not take you seriously? refuses to help and just passes the buck?

what do you peeps take, do, use that actually helps.

yeah thanks, i have tried tens and cbd oil and im on vitamins and Q-10 ect. just nothing is helping. i am having to take bigger doses of insulin to get my bloods down. i also tried the LowCarb high fat diet, but found it was to expensive to continue. especially when your on a budget. i think i will have to try the steamed veg again, i seemed to loose weight on that. and bloods where better. steamed veg and fish!
 
@MrDieselx Alpha Lipoic Acid is mentioned a number of times with regard to helping the symptoms of neuropathy. A number of people here have reported that it can help. So it may be worth a try if you're in that much pain.

Keeping your blood sugar down should help too. If you look at @Omnipod 's posts in that thread above, you'll see he had some good results.

I hope you can find some relief.

i can totally feel for ya -- my Dad is T2 and takes morphine for his neuropathy
( prescribed -- he is in canada )
ultimately it is getting BG's into mid single figures for a sustained period of time that can help alleviate the pain
i honestly do feel for you xx
 
I personally would agree with GP for steering clear of some meds that could be seen as helpful for pain.

I ended up on diazepam (shouldn't really be prescribed for longer than 7 days) for 5 months and also morphine patches. Not for neuropathy though.

They did not get rid of my pain and made my mental health really deterioate and wasn't an easy time getting off the drugs and patches.
They were also blamed for my increased stomach/colon/bowel problems. Tablets meant to be able to help opiate paralysis in colon did not help at all. My colon was already bad prior to the other drugs but whether they made it worse?- probably.

I feel for you as I know how seriously bad pain feels.
However, I also know how bad the other increased damage from stronger drugs can be.

Some drugs (if you drive) have to be notified to dvla. Driving can be restricted.

My GP referred me to a pain management consultant. He offered me other options. I've been on pain management courses and through these I have gained better management of the pain. I also got offered different choice to drugs but that option isn't a choice for neuropathy.

If your GP can send you to pain management courses there are other options to take and worth the time and effort to go.
 
Hi there, steamed veg and fish IS low carb, you don't have to spend a ton of money to do low carb, melt a bit of butter on your veg and you are off.
 
Even with neuropathy pain your brain will be rewiring itself to actually be thinking of pain more,more and more...

Doctors do take pain seriously but cannot keep giving drugs. Other drugs can have extreme side effects. (Morphine patches, diazepam, opoids etc) and your brain will keep rewiring itself.

Please ask if there are pain management courses to go on, they are free and very good.

I've been there with pain. I admit its not all neuropathy pain. However, I can tell you 100% that the opoid drugs that many think can be the help - they aren't.

There are ways to eat low carb on a limited budget. There has been threads on this too.

I did a full breakdown as part of a project on costings, recipes a couple years ago for myself. Mine also included vitamins I needed that were in my food and quantity of foods I was buying. I still do it now, but mines not for budget reasons.

What do you actually contribute the increase your needing extra insulin to? Is it the pain that you contribute to? Or is it really that you are moving less and eating the same and your body is needing more?

I'm not a GP or medical person at all but have had extreme pain and put on opoid drugs. Your GP is probably not passing the buck but really has seen damage that these stronger drugs do..
 
if i stick to low carb diet my blood sugars stay about 8-12 if i have any carbs at all they spike to 22+ i also have fibromyalgia so some times its exceptionally hard to even get up and move about.

spoke to the specialist last month and hes reducing my insulin intake, doubled my testosterone injections and putting me on a tablet that makes you pee out sugar ? so hopefully that will help a bit more,
 
Fibromyalgia is also recognissd as the brain getting used to pain signals and needing routines broken and to work through distraction techniques or mindfulness to manage the pain.
Are you conversant with altering your insulin to your food? Ie dose adjusting for the qty of carbs you eat or do you have to wait to speak to a consultant?

Do you find it difficult to stick to low carb? Only because you write "if" you stick to low carb. Crbs should not spike to 22 if you are giving yourself the correct dose of insulin. Are you on a mixed insulin or bolus/basal regime?
 
If you are type 2 have you had a GAD antibody and a C-peptide test to make sure you are not LADA?
 
4:15 am and pain so bad I haven't slept yet. I have neuropathy and cramps coupled with a sort of swelling feeling, as if my foot has a thick bandage around it. Only been diagnosed with type 2 for a week and had always put the pain down to damage of my feet in frostbite-related climbing expeditions. Now it all makes sense and was only highlighted by a Thai colleague who let me try his meter. He is type 2 with a reading of 120 or so on his 'foreign' meter which obviously uses a different scale to the UK while mine was 258!!!! Booked for an appointment on Thursday with a nurse at the diabetic clinic. Hope something can be done for the pain.
 
I would get tested for Vitamin B12 - I've been reading lately of quite a few people who thought they were suffering from neuropathy, but the symptoms can be very similar to B12 deficiency so it is wise to be tested.

I'm a T2 diabetic 20 years plus . . . On Insulin. Have to admit I didn't look after myself properly when first diagnosed and my compliance with meds. was patchy. Now I'm paying the price.
I have the same condition, bi-lateral diabetic neuropathy and fibromyalgia.
My feet hurt like hell, especially at night.
My Pain Clinic prescribe me with Duloxotine 60mgs twice daily (max dose) and
Tramadol 400mgs per day (again max dose) plus Amitriptline 4 times daily.
Does it help ? No, I don't think so. I take the max dose for each medication but no noticeable reduction in pain. I am going to start taking AHA and see if this makes any difference.
My Consultant tells me the nerve damage is irreversible, but to stop it getting worse, only 1 way - keep blood sugar levels in check.
I am now experiencing tingling in my finger-tips of both hands. Referred to a Neurologist - outcome: Peripheral Nuropathy of course !!
If you find the holy grail of pain relief, please let me know Good Luck
 

the LCHF diet doesn't have to be very expensive if you aim to buy the cheapest cuts of meat in the butcher - such as lamb shank , or neck, liver, kidneys, pork belly and team them up with loads of seasonal vegetables in slow cooked stews.
 
Hi I take duloxatine and Lyrca together for neuropathy they have found that taken together they work well and they do.

hi I have neuropathy in both of my feet to I find freeze spray or but your feet in a bowl of cold water helps
 
Hi know what you're saying and feeling.. I became T2 after I finished my treatment (chemo/radiotherapy) for Hodgkins lymphoma.( I'm 4years in remission.) the side effects of my cancer and treatment has left me with wide spread Neuropathy and diabetes.. I'm on Gabapentin for trapped nerve & disc probs in neck but it's supposed to help my neuropathy as well!! Yep in constant pain in my feet/lower legs and both hands.. feels like I'm walking over glass,constant pains ... burning stabbing or shooting pains also a kind of burning Cold feeling at times.. Any change in temperature even slight, makes it a hell of a lot worse I find.. difficulty wearing normal footwear,it has to be crocs for me.I've Pains in joints and muscles but I try to move about as much as I can.. Had to come off a lot of meds so having to get bye on as little as possible.
 
T1 with neuropathy here, and I feel your pain. My legs also cramp because of the neuropathy, and it got to the point where I spent most nights rolling on the floor in tears. Tried a few different drugs, amitriptyline, gabapentin, Pregabalin etc etc but what finally helped was Quinine Sulphate. A 200mg tablet at night helped it all, the cramps and the shooting pains. This isn't to say I now don't suffer, I still have no feelings in my feet, and the aches are still there, but no cramps in the last 3 months of being on Quinine and the shooting pains, on the rare occasions I do get them, are a lot less intense than before! Hope this helps.
