Am just glad I love in a bungalow as there's no way I could manage stairs

Stairs became a real hazard for me until I had a stair lift put in. I had to wait one year for it and while I was waiting I had to live downstairs and that meant using a commode and strip washing. I must say that those couple of years were the worst in my life and my mental health was at rock bottom.
I know we have different problems but I understand a measure of what you are going through. My overall concern is that if you stop moving about for fear of falling this may end up in you not wanting to leave the house. This was my biggest mistake, 'Outside' became a place of dread for me at one point and that took a long time to conquer.

I must admit, not going out at all will hard. Am waiting for the physio to get back to me to see if they can help. With easter, I am not expecting to hear anything at least until next Tuesday.

Thankfully I had my Asda order delivered Tuesday just gone. I do have a little shop in the village where I love but there's no way at the moment that I can walk there. If things get worse over easter then I will call 111 for advice

That's great news. Take a list of questions like you did at your last HCP appointment and Good Luck.

Ally - I would really urge you to tackle this ongoing issue from every available angle.

When you see the physio, please do tell her everything that is concerning you. It's likely she will be able to help you in some way in relation to your knee injury - whether it's telling you to rest it, or to give you some (usually very boring) exercises to do.

If she feel unable to help too much on the balance front, then please do ask her what specialism she would expect to be helping you with that; perhaps the Occupational Therapists.

Recently, my neighbour had her second hop replacement done, and was quite nervous of her stairs and a few other things. The OTs visisted her at home and "prescribed" additional banisters, which were pretty obvious, but also other things, like grips for using the bath (even though she has a walk-in shower), but also she was lent a little trolley thing for taking dishes from her kitchen to table and so on, meaning she could concentrate on walking, rather than walking and balancing whatever she would have been carrying. They were willing to send someone around to fit the extra banisters, but she wanted to match them up with what was already there.

They're very clever, resourceful, and may not be able to make your feet any more sensitive, but they might have some ideas for helping your confidence and making your life a bit safer.

Thank you for the info.
I know my feeling in my feet and leg lower leg will always stay numb.
It's the falling I am most worried about because it's now quite frequently.
I had thought about those trolley things, Don, t really want one but realistically I feel that it will benefit me.
Some of it is pride but have to forget about that. It will help me in not falling over.

Ally, I know you're not the same age as my Mum, but when she started having mobility issues, she fought tooth and nail not to have any help at all, but in the end, when she gave in, she admitted her quality of life and general confidence improved no end, and the OT's assessing really get it, and they've seen it all before.

They helped Mum with seemingly small things like suggesting like a chip basket in the saucepan when boiling potatoes or vegetables, so that when they were done and needed drained, she could just lift the basket, using it's handle, straight out of the saucepan, then leave the boiling water to cool before tipping it away.

There are some wonderful people out there, desperate to help. You could ask to be referred if it's not offered.

I often think of alliebee. We got on great. We often sent pm"s
I sent her a few bit never got replies so I am assuming something happened. The last I knew was that her ms has got worse.
When I see the physio, this time I will have to be more assertive. If she can't help I will ask who or where or what I can do as I am getting nowhere with my gp surgery

I will have to be assertive and if the physio can't help them I will ask where I go to to get like you said about the OT

Hi Ally, how are you doing now? I just came across your thread as I have mild neuropathy in my feet and I'm trying to learn what I can about it. Did you ever get any help with walking and reducing the risk of falls?

I now have a walker with a seat. That helps greatly

I know this is a different problem caused by a different condition but neuropathy used to make my knees buckle while I was still able to walk with sticks.
Mine are like nerve twitches which result in loss of power. Yours?

You have sciatica? This can cause twitching and other sensory dysfunction. It is the damage to my spine that causes these symptoms. The buckling plus the balance problems plus sight disturbance means that I am considered high risk for falls along with everything else.

That's great to hear, Ally! How is everything else going? I've been reading some of your posts and I think you've been doing an extraordinarily good job in trying circumstances. I take my hat off to you!

Yes scatica and body damage from sugar. Nerves, muscles and all attachments including skin. I've been told.
I guess 40yrs of insulin resistance is taking its toll.
I'm hoping I will get rid of scatica, everyone else in my family does but none diabetic.
Physio feels swimming will hold the keep to releasing nipped nerve. I hope he's right.
I don't know anyone with scatica for 3+yrs. You?
We are very different and I'm praying I can eventually lose my aid. He's not promising.
I wish i could see my problem on a scan to get my head around it.
Bariatric op will not cause me to be immobile for long. They get you walking around next day. I'll be stiff and wearing decompression wraps. The sooner I walk around the better. Especially for my kidneys.
Just awaiting surgical team letter now. Then the ball will start rolling in earnest.
I'm so pleased I have a decent physio person now. He definitely knows his stuff.
I think I'm in good hands.
I cannot wait to see a lighter me. I'm sure my back will too.
If on far less insulin then now so in theory I should lose even just from that. (maybe) .

Once I'm at my best weight I will be able to assess which pain is from diabetes neuropathy and which was scatica and weight baring pressure.
Ive looked up S1 on Google but not had a good read due to family interruptions. I will read more to get a fuller picture of my pain maker.
