Hi everybody ! I am just newly diagnosed type 1/1.5 (they are not sure yet) I have been on insulin for 1 week now and totally confused and out of my comfort zone. I like to be in control and understand everything and well diabetes has just pushed me over the edge! Anyway I am hoping that some of you lovely people could point me in the right direction to do some research and try and get my head around everything. Please any advice would be much appreciated

Hi Jen

Sorry I can't help with any advice, as I'm Type 2. But just wanted to say hi and welcome to the forum :) The folks here are a real mine of information and so supportive. You've definitely come to the right place!

Hi @Jen92' :)

If you're looking for a good book, I recommend Think Like A Pancreas. It's got a lot of information in but you can dip into it as you please.

I also recommend frequent testing so you can see what's going on. Have you been shown how to count carbs and adjust your insulin accordingly? If not, push for that, as it's crucial for good control.

The final thing to say is that it does get easier :) Type 1 is a huge lifestyle change and an awful lot to get your head round. Give yourself time and be kind to yourself. Try to take one day at a time and know that we all understand how hard it can be :)

Ask as many questions as you want here. There are lots of friendly people for advice and support :)

Hi and welcome. There are many T1 and T1.5s on the forum. Has the GP taken the two tests for T1.5 (LADA) yet i.e. GAD and c-peptide? There are some pointers to LADA such as being slim and perhaps on the young side or having lost weight unexpectedly. LADA is T1 that comes on later in life and can come on quite slowly. Sometimes tablets will work for a while (they did for me) but insulin will be needed and it's better to start the insulin early. The right diet is important for all of us and most find a low-carb diet is the right approach. Although with insulin you can be more flexible you can gain weight if you have too many carbs. If you want any help/info about insulin do come back perhaps on the T1 or LADA forum. Some nurses provide excellent support but not all.
