Just been diagnosed type 2 but only on diat as level was 8.9 read an awful lot on what i can eat getting the hang of but am totally confused about fruit and what type is ok to eat I'm led to believe its full of sugars.......help

I bought the Collins Gem Carb Counter after someone else had used it to help me with a question. So far berries are the only fruit I`ve eaten post diagnoses as I am eating low carb.

Berries in season, plums and apricots are supposed to be the best for not affecting your blood glucose too much. I can manage a small apple a day without too much trouble. Also a small orange - but not the same day!

The ones that I avoid are things like grapes, bananas and pineapple. We are all different, though - the best thing to do is test your BG level before eating fruit, and then 2 hours after, so you can see what it does to you - if they've given you a meter to test with, of course!

If you get yourself a carb counter book, the fruits with the lowest carbs are the lowest in sugar and will do least harm. Sugars are carbs just like bread, pasta, rice etc. For tinned fruit - read the labels. Lowest total carbs per 100g - and eat nothing that's in syrup!

Hope this helps

Yes, it is best to test your way through trying different fruits and carbs, to see what suits you. I tolerate bananas very well, but nectarines, plums and peaches spike me something rotten.

......and I can eat large amounts of fresh pineapple without a blip. I currently don't eat any fruit at all though.

I eat a small green apple and either a small orange or a couple of clemantines most days, and often half a grapefruit for breakfast, test before and after eating every type of food and you will soon find out what you can eat and what you cant eat or what you need to cut right back on :D

We are all different so what is OK for one person may not be so good for another its all trial and error. Test, test, test

Thanks folks now I'm really fxxxxxd havent seen a dietian yet but I will carry on REgardless I dont feel ill at all and my level was 8.9 and told to avoid prossed food and all sugary things , but thanks you all, its a very confussing thing this diabetes.

Hi taffplod

It will be worth investing in a meter and strips. All my adult life I've dieted, the usual way - low fat, low sugar etc and never been able to lose it easily or keep it off.

Since being diagnosed in mid dec 2011 I've changed everythiing I've ever thought about my eating. the main change I found was I wasn't trying to lose weight, I was tryiing to bring my BG down. Then what happend was I lost weight.

I changed to low carb,I'm not specific on how many I have it tends to be <30 some days and <80 other days. I rarely go over that, mainly because any more puts my bg up. Also, and this is a biggy for me as I'm greedy, I DIDNT need them.

I won't kid you, I was hungry at first but I just ate every 2 hours (not always full meals) and then tested. Iused my first month ish to see how I was reacting to carbs.

Since then I've brought my HBA1c down from 7.1% to 5.99% in 3 months and as a (very nice) side effect have lost 25lbs.

Without the meter and following the NHS advice I am absolutely convinced my HBA1c would have gone up and the GP would be having a go at me for not following their low fat, low sugar advice and I'd be losing and gaining the same 3 or 4 lb that I have been for the last 4 years.

Good luck with it all

my advice on that is totally split. lol

- Go on enjoy it - you've the rest of your life to get this sorted. Get started immediately you get back.

- If you can't be strong just after diagnosis, when the hell will you be.

See told you

holiday was great I ate loads of salad stuff which I do enjoy and of course no puddings , but gallons of the best Cuba rum. discovered on my return that beetroot and toatoes are high in sugar , how bad are they as i really enjoy tomatoe based food Spagbol chillis etc, and if I have to give them up I will be seriously peed off.

My book lists 1 medium tomato at 4.1g carb - which is quite high. 6 cherry tomatoes is 4.6g. If you're trying to ultra low carb (<30g per day ala Bernstein) then you're not going to allow too many tomatoes. I add a bit to salads because they're pretty much the only carb in the meal. Beetroot is similar - 90g pickled is showing at 3.5 - boiled is worse at 6.9g .

(book is Collins Gem Carb Counter).

Have a look at Viv's Modified Atkins DIet, which is a Sticky Thread. It is the first phase of Dr Atkins weight loss diet, but it works very well for getting blood glucose and blood pressure down.

This version is very low carb - I have a lot of weight to lose! If you want to eat more carbs each day, get yourself a Carb Counter book and add on carbs by eating Low GI fruit (a little) and veg. Collins do one in their Gem series - it has a few inaccuracies but is portable. In your place I wouldn't go over 100g per day, and less if you have weight to lose.

Do try to get yourself a blood glucose monitor and some testing strips. You could ask the doctor or nurse - tell them you are trying to educate yourself about diabetes, and you want to test to find out how different foods affect your blood glucose levels. It's worth it, even if you only do it for a few months. You may have to cut some foods out altogether; others you may be able to eat, but in much smaller portions.

I enjoy my diet, and I never feel hungry. I'm also finding that as my weight comes down and my blood glucose readings lower with it (my HbA1c's are always in the 5s, these days), I can tolerate a few more carbs every day without harm to my BGs. If I go over about 70g I start gaining weight again :(

As for tomatoes - they are a bit high in carbs, but they contain so many nutrients that Atkins allows them. Apparently cooked tomatoes are even better for you than raw ones  . So don't worry too much about tomato-y foods. It's the pasta or pizza-base you have to worry about!
