I’ve been diagnosed with type 2, I’ve been out on metformin and gliclazide, any advice on what foods are good to eat and what is best avoided? Thank you

Thank you, I’ve swapped white bread for wholemeal granary bread also swapped to wholewheat pasta and brown rice, I’m currently living on wheatabix for breakfast with blueberries and salad for lunch and a no carb or little carbs for evening meal, but I’m struggling because I have a very sweet tooth

I'm afraid that all of those foods have a very high carbohydrate content and white or brown they aren't that great for someone with T2.
You'd be better off with eggs and bacon for breakfast rather than weetabix and will probably feel fuller for the day as well.
Anything starchy and stodgy won't be good for you at all.

It’s difficult to get eggs and bacon as I work from 7-4 and I can’t eat breakfast till at least 9am as I don’t feel hungry till then we don’t have a working canteen at my place of work, that’s why I go for cereal as they provide milk, any other suggestions on breakfast??

Greek yoghurt and a few berries maybe.

I was looking at the sugar content of Greek yogurt and there is loads of sugar in it, or am I reading it wrong??
Real Greek yoghurt (not Greek style) is low in sugar/carbs. Stuff like skyr or fage

Also if you are taking gliclazide be careful you don’t go hypo with low carb. You will be surprised what an impact carbs have on your sugar levels. Good luck.

If you can prepare ahead mini quiches (in a muffin tray) are handy. Line the cups with ham or bacon, add onions, mushrooms, peppers etc in whatever proportions suit you and add beaten egg. Bake til just set. Store in the fridge. Eat as desired..

Breakfast doesn’t have to be traditional breakfast food. Last nights leftovers are often tomorrow’s breakfast for me, as happens in much of the non western world.

Cold meats and cheese with a boiled egg is another option.

Do you test? I would hope on glicazide you were given a kit and taught how to handle a hypo.

Testing will show you what foods cause an issue and which don’t if you test just before and after meals. You might be told no need or even not to do so but quite frankly that’s rubbish. It’s either a lack of knowledge what testing can show or covering for cost cutting. Test before a meal and again around 2 hrs later. A rise of 2mmol is the most you want to see.

Glicazide can be a balancing act with low carb eating. It should compliment your diet. If you eat less carbs you’ll probably need less glicazide. If you lower carbs then it’s quite likely you’ll need dose adjusting downward s or else you’ll get too low and maybe suffer a hypo. If you’re told to eat carbs to match glicazide then it’s the wrong way round!! Meds have an important role in some diabetic’s care but shouldn’t dictate diet. No sense eating carbs, raising glucose, taking meds to lower glucose when you can just eat fewer carbs and take no or less medications.

Sending you a hug. Btw those quiches @HSSS suggests are delish and hardly take any time to make.

Hello, thank you all for you advice, I’m ready to take this diabetes on :) now I have a very sweet tooth, and yogurt and berries just aren’t doing it for me, is there anything I can have to quash my sweet craving??

Very dark choc, ideally over 85%? Made into a mouse or hot drink perhaps
Cream, cream cheese and a bit of sweetener and a splash of vanilla essence all whizzed up til thick
Sugar free jelly
Freeze the yog and berries into an ice cream sort of thing
Keto muffins with Sweetener, cream and berries (ditchthecarbs.com recipe)
Keto biscuits or cookies (just google for loads of variations)
Keto carrot cake (Ditch the carbs again)

The danger of scratching the itch is that for some it prolongs the cravings, but for others it helps them not feel deprived and stay on track. Think about which you are before you indulge!

Pickled onions. No I’m not mad. Sometimes just a really strong flavour kills my sweet cravings dead

Thank you will look into it, I haven’t touched anything sweet since my diagnosis so I know I can go without or prolong periods I will try the dark chocolate see if that helps

the sweet cravings get easier and easier once the cycle is broken. all the best : )
