I think the glucose gels are better.

Probably, but these gels, and other dextrose products, are sort of specialist products, that aren't available everywhere. I tend to put a high value on how easily I can buy food to treat hypos.

I'd rather have a less than perfect product I can buy from the shop round the corner, then a perfect product that is harder to get hold of.

I think I may have told this story before, many years ago - probably 20 as I was fairly newly diabetic at the time too but I worked with a colleague who was also T1D, lets just say he wasn't the greatest diabetic. One morning I came in and found him half asleep, I asked if it was a heavy night last night and the response was a sort of yes and he seemed to perk up a bit, I assumed because someone else was now in the office. the way the office was arranged I sat with my back to him and set about work (no really I did!) 10-15mins later we had a meeting to attend and turned round and said come on we've got such and such meeting to go to. There he was slumped back in his chair, pretty unresponsive, when asking a question I occasionally got a grunt out of him. Fortunately there was a drinks vending machine just out in the hall so I quickly got a can of 'real' coke and managed to get some in his mouth (and down his shirt!), I knew it was risky because he could hardly respond to anything - even pain (well you have to kick a man when he's down!) - our boss turned up wondering where we were for this meeting, she was a bit freaked out and was wanting to call an ambulance, but that first sip of coke had started to work it's magic and he became a bit responsive - more coke sipped, and he dipped back into being unresponsive, a minute later he was back to being just a little bit more responsive than the last time, more coke, back down he went, but as he became more and more responsive more and more coke could be swallowed properly and created an upward spiral. It was amazing to see how each time more coke went in the longer the period of responsiveness shortly followed. By the end of the can of coke he was able to sort him self out but the so and so still owes me 50p for the coke!

That’s a fab story and yes I get what you mean - you use what you need to use!

You will need to get 'Glucose' into his bloodstream as fast as possible. Would he drink 'Lucozade' (The Orriginal Version) which is Glucose already in liquid form and is quickly absorbed. Failing this get him to drink a NON DIET drink or eat a few Jelly Babies (a small hand full 10-20) will work but he would need to chew them to help disolve them to get the quickest benifit.
What-ever-you choose you need to follow this up with someting that will then raise and support his Blood/Glucose over a greater time period. a few buiscuits (sugary types rather than plain buscuits) milk chocolate or sandwiches.
Someone with hopefully be along soon with greater knowledge than myself to give you practical advise better than myself.
Hi only one drink brings my BS up quickly and I mean quickly.
Jelly babies are great when u know and can swallow them but I know when u r hypo I could never chew.jelly babies in a.hypo!!
Lucozade is the only one for me.
Good luck!

Hello!

So we’re almost 9 weeks in to diagnosis, my son is 11 and type 1. So far he’s only ever taken the glucose tablets when treating a hypo but he complained about them for the first time at 6am this morning when I tested him and he was hypo (and half asleep!)

So I’m looking for new suggestions please, he doesn’t drink fizzy pop so that’s out of the question but I have read jelly babies work?! And a small (200ml) of orange juice? How many jelly babies would he need to have for 15-20g fast acting glucose?

Thanks in advance,
janelle

Just did a bit of searching and came accross these pdf's they have hypo plans for various children and what and how much to give depending on weight of child I hope it helps you. They include sweeties ;)
