New on insulin

Hi . Recently i put on insulin novomix 30.
8 units in the morning and 8 in night.... Plus the oral medication which is
Gliclazide 80mg .2 tabs twice daily
Eucreas 1 TAB twice daily...
The readings i am getting
Before breakfast 9.4--6.8--7.9--6.2
Before lunch 5.9---4.4---3.5
After lunch 7.9---- 15.9
Before dinner 6.5----5.7

What do you think if these numbers...?? Plus i am very nervous about injecting myself twice daily ....i am not very comfortable with needles. And when ever i think i will have to do this for rest of my life makes me feel very bad.
Is it possible to control sugar levels by any herbal or oral medication in my case or any kind of insulin which only needs to be injected once daily.....

I cant read ur readings its in mg /dl i think
And there is nothing dangerous on he needle thing it wont hurt at all
Get 4 mm novofine and dont push too much inside
U will learn with the time

First Q where are you injecting?? For years I was told to inject into thighs which gave me very odd readings. Then new nurse told me the only really effective way is with 4 or 5mm needles around the belly button at min 1 inch from button. I inject large doses 82units a day over 3 injections and work clockwise around the B button. Since doing this 2 years ago my BS readings have been much more consistent.

I was told to go for stomach, thighs or bottom. I've been using 5mm needle and find them a little painful with my thighs so I avoid that area now. Absolutely no problems with doing it on my bottom when at home or stomach if I'm out and about! I'm awaiting my new prescription of 4mm needles to see if that stops some of the pain in my thigh

I lost a lot of weight pre diagnosis so it's thought that just 1mm difference should help me!

I been told to inject in tummy fat.. Sometimes it is painful . I could feel the insulin going in. Is it normal?

I was told that they don't recommend the arm as there is usually a lot of muscle there

My nurse said back of arm is ok too ! Strange how much different opinions we get from professionals regarding many things concerned with diabetes. My nurse says to test BG before meals for instance where many here suggest best time is after ! It gets confusing sometimes !

Hi mo1905. I think testing before meals makes sense if you need to decide how much short-acting insulin to inject but apart from that 2 hours after is perhaps more useful as it tells you the impact of foods and/or short-acting insulin and whether you need higher medication of any type (or just to eat less!)

Thanks Daibell. It makes sense what you're saying. Just weird that all the healthcare providers I've dealt with have never suggested this. At present, I take a basal insulin at night and Humalog with every meal. I'm quite a low dose though, only 1 unit for every 15g of carbs. My nurse believes I am still in the "honeymoon phase". Do you this this may be why ? I'm type 1 by the way.

If i calculate(approx)carbs of each meal shall i use your method of
1unit = 15 carbs.

@choudry, check with your nurse. Most people take 1 unit per 10g of carbs I believe. Once you have that info, counting the carbs is fairly straightforward ! Good luck ;-)

I take 1 unit per 12g and 1 unit per 15g depending on the time of day, works out as 2 or 3 units per meal. I'm in the honeymoon period too and have been told this will increase as my pancreas packs it in completely!

I am new to injections . Firstly the fear of needle , secondly pain ( when i press the insulin in the body)
Is that pain normal or what.
Someone told me about getting a pump , been to chemist today and they told ,only can be reffered by doctor and you can only get from hospital
Any one using pump please advice,is it comfortable and works better than injecting by pens?

It's not pleasant to inject but shouldn't be too painful ! What size needles do you have ? 4mm is plenty. Sometimes, the pain is psychological, the fear of pain rather than pain itself. As fir getting a pump, not easy I don't think, unless you really struggle to sort your blood glucose levels.

Hi, I'm also in the honeymoon period and very insulin sensitive. My DSN and dietician have told me to stick to fixed doses utnil I have don the DAFNE course and had my personal CHO/Isulin ratio worked out.

I've been on a carb counting course and have BG between 4.5 and 8 mmol/l 90% of the time so my DSN is happy for me to continue as I am until my DAFNE in November. Each person is different I guess!
