new to all this !!!! really high blood sugar levels

Hello all im really new to this all, I only found out 3 days ago and only got the confirmation yesterday that im Type 1. My doctor has said because of my age her wants to give the tablets a week to work before he puts me on insulin !!!
My trouble is my sugar level just dont seem to want to come down, it has varied over the last 3 days from 15.1 to 26.6 at the highest but 2 hours after eating its always in the 20s and its making me feel ill !!! any advise you could give me please would be very welcome my GP doesnt get back to me !!! Thank you Emma
 
Hello, my first advice would be ask for a different GP! I'm type 2 so not got the knowledge you need but plenty of other people here will answer soon!

Can you see a different Dr in your practice? I'm not a type 1 but i thought type 1's were started on insulin straight away. If you can't get to see another Dr then prehaps ringing NHS Direct for advice would be a good idea.
 
Ive been told that by a few people so im now questioning his diagnose. Im thinking he may have it wrong as my blood sugar levels are up but i dont have ketones in my water.
Im seeing nurse on monday hopefully she will help x x x
 
If you are a T1 then you are not producing insulin. Pills will do nothing for a T1 and only insulin replacement therapy will for you.

Do yourself a favour and consult another GP straight away or go to an A & E if a GP is not available today.
 
Hi, emma, welcome to us all here, keep an eye on both yourself and your BS levels, if they keep rising n you start to feel very ill, ring up GP or off to the A&E dept, as with type1 you will need IRT insulin replcacement therapy. Keep in touch and please let us know how you go on Anna.x :)
 
Ask to be referred to a hospital consultant....they deal with diabetes 24.7. GP's as much as they may specialise in diaetes,,,don't deal with it 24/7 and are loathe because of their budgets to give out as many blood strips and other things that we need...However a consultant and DSN from hospital can write and tell gp what to do, and they have to prescribe accordingly......

If you are a type 1, I peronsally would have thought that you needed t go on to insulin straightaway, but I am not a medic trained person...so obviously could be totally wrong.

Constultants at hospitals are also more likely from my experience to get you to see the peiople that you need..and that you should be asking to see...i.e a dietitian and to start carb counting......
 
It sounds as though your gp is treating as a T2 diabetic not a T1 diabetic..

If you were T1 diabetes then it's likely that your BG would flucuate between meals and you would probably with levels nearing the 20's would have ketones in the urine and suffer from weight loss, you be surpised how much a T1 can lose in weight in a couple of days when they hit the crisis point and DKA..

Age wise well this is a slight myth, you can get T1 or T2 at any age, T1 in older people does however seem to be a slower on set than in younger people, so can be mistaken for T2 at the begining. So can't be totally ruled out.

If you are on the heavier side for your height and carry this mainly around the stomach area, this can predispose you to T2 diabetes rather T1...

Quite often clinical presentation of the patient can be enough to determine between T1 or T2 diabetes, but C-peptide and GAD testing can give more or less a definate answer to type if there is any uncertainties..

In you case with a very unsure sounding doctor I would asked to be refered to the hospital diabetic team...
 
You may be going through a period where your body is still producing small amounts of insulin. I went through this for quite a long time and then I had to really increase my insulin over a very short space of time. The doctor that you saw may have trying to keep you off insulin for the time being. I can't be positive though. If your sugars are still high then go the hospital to see what they say
 
Thank you all so much my blood sugar levels are still really high 24.9 today but now at 19.8.
I did talk to the doctor fri but he said I will be fine and that he said the tablets wouldn't work and just to come back next Thursday!!!!! I am seeing diabetic nurse on Monday so hopefully get some answers. :D
 
Hi emmaf , crikey your BS levels did peak up thankfully they are coming down now, monday will soon be here and then you can get some answers and be steered in the right direction, next thursday will feel too long a wait till then for you, keep in touch and do let us know how you go on. Anna.x :)
