new to diabetes

Do ask for your cholesterol readings Garry, also statins can cause diabetes. How long have you been on them?
since I found out I had diabeties last week, I was given 2 metformin 500mg when eating, then given simvastatin 20mg at night. I don't have a clue whats going on, I cant wait to see this doctor ive been terrified since being told.

You must ask for a print out of all your blood test results. That way you can study them at leisure, look things up and ask on here. Please do not accept any verbal comments such as this or that is "fine" or "a bit high" or whatever. You need to know exactly, and then find out what that means. Knowledge is power. You will also find these useful down the line for comparisons to see how you are improving.

It may be you do need statins, or it may be they were prescribed simply because you are diabetic. My GP told me "we give statins to all diabetics". Well that is plain lunacy if that diabetic doesn't happen to need them. With a copy of the cholesterol results in your hand you would be in a position to judge for yourself whether or not you need statins. There is plenty of information around about need for statins.

Don't wait until you see your doctor. Start now. You can order a blood glucose meter and then you can start working out a suitable, enjoyable and sustainable diet for yourself that will lower your blood glucose levels. Ask for those print outs so you have the information in your hand before you see your doctor. That way you will be prepared. (ring the receptionist and ask for them)

This disease is quite controllable with diet and if necessary Metformin, but diet and knowledge are the keys. Put yourself in charge.

All this will help with your emotional issues.

Theres no need to be scared, you are in the best place on this forum, honestly. Get your readings then come back and see us. There are no daft questions here just ask and I can guarantee they will be answered.

Hi I was bit like that but I asked my docs nurse about a blood sugar levels machine she have me one. But this site is fantastic it's helped me it to understand diabetes and the different types low carb diets I've got the carb receipe from here. Ive know about hypo's because of this site. As others have said, diet and exercise are key - together with monitoring your own levels.

I was diagnosed at 141% .... but only a few months later am doing better.

Just remember that everyone is different and what works for you, might not work for others (and vice versa) we all have to find our own way of dealing with diabetes and getting our numbers where we want them to be.

Do you know what your cholesterol numbers were? There is a lot of discussion here and elsewhere about the effectiveness of statins and their side effects. Have you had a coronary event ever?
I have never had any corenary heart problems ever, although my family members have but they aren't diabetic

Statins can cause muscle pain and that's why people stop taking them. See if there is an alternative to it. Also don't laugh when I say Vitamin D deficiency can cause muscle and bone pain so maybe ask the doctor for a blood test.
