I was admitted to hospital in March this year with DKA and Sepsis, they have no idea which came first. I have to take steroids and always have low grade infection which isn’t treated until I get borderline sepsis. I was unconscious/out of it for about 6 days and twice my kids were called in because they didn’t think they could fix my problems. When I woke up I was on insulin and the plan was to continue that but after all these drs talking I was transferred to Metformin which seemed to work and discharged just as Covid was getting serious.
After being home and taking BS 3 times a day the GP increased my metformin to twice a day and said my BS would settle, it’s now just about a month and my BS are running from 9.5 to 15.7 (17.3 once)
I’m following all the low carb diet but can’t get my BS to go down. I rang the GP about 2 weeks ago about something else and told him but was just told I’d be seen in July by the diabetic nurse.
So do I just wait or should I be telling them again? They seem to brush it off as not a problem but in hospital they said fasting BS (so morning should be around 4 but that’s not happening) and over 15 was a problem.

Hi. I think it's long term damage from high levels that is the concern, so maybe your Dr wants to defer anything until July what with all this Covid-19 going on and having to call you in for more bloods. But if you're still not happy then pester them again. All the best.

From your post, I would guess that your blood glucose levels are probably being driven up by the use of steroids. This is a known and unfortunate side affect for diabetics. Having infections is also likely to raise glucose levels because it's part of the body's defence mechanism. In a non-diabetic person the glucose gets used up fighting the infection, but we cannot use the glucose efficiently so it builds up in the bloodstream.

Being on a low carb diet will help, but what are you actually eating?

Hi @KarenGG ,

I don't have much else to add for the moment, as the steroids have already been addressed, (you don't happen to be on statins as well? Those will also up bloodsugars) but it'd help if we knew what you're eating. And, well, I'm sorry you went through all that..!

No, I’m not on statins, I’m following a lot of the advice on here about eating and doing the best I can without any ‘professional’ help, I was suppose to go to appointment on 29 April but of course that was cancelled, the endocrinologist has written to my GP for blood test but no idea when that will be, do I assume while my BS is not in ranges that the Hba1c will go up? It was 9.3 (whatever that means) I don’t know what it was on discharge so don’t know if it’s gone up or down

I’m pretty much using a keto type diet, I can’t eat nuts but reduced every carb (potatoes, bread etc) I can by googling ideas. It doesn’t help that I was told there’s no such thing as diabetic diet, I don’t have extra sugar, drink loads of water, the nurse at GP increased metformin to twice a day and said it takes time to take effect but not how long, I’m not technically going back to see her til end July but sugars keep going up
