Newbie - Excuse the endless Blurb

I was diagnosed with type 2 over 6 months ago. My gp told me I would be put on a course to do with diabetes and althoughI have hassled them about this and I have been referred over 4 times - nothing has happened - I have in the mens time tried to learn more, but it is very difficult as I have other health conditions and the diets relating to the other stuff conflict with the diabetes diet. anyway I have been told to focus on this diet but I'm mostly going blank around what I should be doing and seem to make the same meal (roast chicken, sweet potato and veg) 1-3 times a week and am not really enjoying sorting food out. Equally I would like to feel i could eat more exciting snacks but currently, it's only roasted unsalted almonds ( and probably too many) that I don't feel too guilty about. Basically I spend lot of time fasting and not eating enough which normally culminates in overeating night. Need healthy snacks- healthy meals and stuff to cover me for having a sweet tooth and trying to avoid the 'naughty' stuff....help !

Hello and welcome,

Have you read around on this site? I manage my condition by very low carb and I use artificial sweeteners as part of that. Sweet potato is a distant memory for me.

What other conditions do you have that require dietary assistance and what do they require in terms of diet?

Hello & Welcome.

Probably it is the Desmond course you will be put on if you are Type 2 - personally for me it was a waste of time as what they tell us to eat on that course differs from what I and a lot of Type 2s eat which is low carb - I have attached some information which may be of use to you depending on what you can or cannot eat.

Low carb info
Intro to T2 and low carb. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/
All the things I wish I’d been told earlier https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/th...ish-i’d-been-told-at-type-2-diagnosis.173817/

I find it very useful to test my bloods (although my diabetic nurse has advised against it, most of them do) but how would I know what effect different foods have on my bloods if I am not able to check. If this is something you would want to do let us know and we can advise on some testing equipment that we use/recommend.

Keep asking questions - it's the only way you will find out things - they are a very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable team on here.

Take care

I have only just seen this ! Thank you 3 years too late ! I will be looking it though. Much appreciated,I did do the course online. My issues are that because I have various other health issues it is hard to take the info when it is so generic and will not necessarily work without understanding my other conditions and the conflicts relating to diet. I will check out the links you mentioned !

It's a bit of a nightmare getting on the courses. I'm not sure if it's the same for the type 2 courses but I have to wait nearly a year for the DAFNE course. It's a long wait but could be different in your area.

Having moved area where I live, I have found that diabetes management is completely different here. At long last, have been put on Libre 2 which my previous consultant had recommended. Also attended Daphne course, which I had never heard of. Both have revolutionised my diabetes management, making my life easier but not improving my results which were very good anyway. It’s a shame that there isn’t standardised treatment across the country!
