Hi Guys - I am Karen. I have PCOS and was put on metformin about 5/6 years ago. After a year a I was told I was borderline diabetic and the dose was increased. At some point I guess I was confirmed as type 2 diabetic but not sure when. I was very overweight and was on 500 mg 4 times a day. In January the light flicked on when I realised I didnt want to automatically be put on statins and would also like to get off diabetic meds. I have been working really hard and got my cholesterol down to 3.79 (good to bad) whatever that means. I have also lost 5 stone and 5lbs.

In the last 2-3 months I have had moments of feeling faint and today I think I actually did faint - found myself sliding to the floor after a darkness came over me. I had eaten about an hour before and did my sugars - something I have been told not to do as I attend a diabetic clinic who monitor me. Anyway sugars were only 3.3. Could my dosage with the weight loss and controlled diet be too high now?

Also I am feeling weak (muscles) aches and pains, I feel quite grumpy quite quickly and generally dont feel at myself. I also have psoriasis and despite being on a biological treatment that was working I have been flaring up since June. I guess I think my sugars are going too low - am seeing the doc tomorrow about my cholesterol but the nurse didnt do my HBA1c last week so he wont have a reading - should I ask for that to be done or would finger prick test be enough?

Am anxious about reducing the metformin too as it does help my PCOS - any thoughts on my worries?

Cheers,

K

Hiya Kaffinity, first of all CONGRATULATIONS on all the fab changes you've already made to your health and well being! I think your weight loss is awesome...and we all know it goes on a lot easier than it comes off unfortunately! Your cholesterol levels are gr8 too. About 2yrs ago under 5 was good, then they moved the goalpost to under 4, so you are doing fab! These improvements mean that your BMI is now lower, so you need to get yr doctor to look again at your medication requirements. Tell her/him whats been happening, how you're feeling, your psoriasis and PCOS concerns etc., and I'm sure your meds will be re-adjusted. Your blood glucose levels ARE getting too low at under 4.0, and if you feel light headed or dizzy, SIT DOWN, sip a glass of ordinary cola or pop to get your glucose up quickly, then eat a sandwich to elongate the effect and keep you feeling well. I'd love to know exactly what you did to lose 5 st 5 lbs, and how you did it in only 9 months!? Finally, I'd suggest you make a note of your Q's/concerns, and take it with you 2moro, so you don't 4get 2 mention anything, and make sure all of your concerns are answered to your satisfaction. Best wishes.

Thanks so much Marion - I joined slimming world in January and lost it all on the SW plan. Saw Doc on Monday and he asked me to check sugars for 3 days and he ran an HBA1c when I said I fainted. My daily sugars were no more than 4.1 and when I rang on Thursday my HBA1c was only 5.4. Doc said to stop metformin x2000 mg and he will check me again in 12 weeks, if readings stay below 6 I wont have to go back on meds. I am absolutely delighted!!

Hba1c of 5.4% is a non-diabetic number.

Hi Kaffinity and welcome to the forum :D

I suffer from psoriasis too,my parents went to doctors in many places with the hope of curing me of the disease. However, my conditions did not get any better despite the expense of a lot of money. They decided to have a try and took me to a Chinese hospital. The affected sites on my body had improved significantly in less than a month. After reinforcement treatment of experts, I have completely recuperated my health and I have become cheerful. I would like to share this with whoever has the same problems, you can talk to their doctors on the website of vitiligotcm.
