Hi all

I've been reading this forum for the past week or so and fund it very informative. I have not been diagnosed with anything, touch wood, but for the past year had declining health. Without rambling too much things like fatigue, I mean crawl on my knees fatigue, recurrent thrush, wounds taking a while to heal, & other various issues. I have started to notice that after a carb based meal, about 1 hour afterwards I cannot keep my eyes open. I am aware its happening almost as if I'm going to faint, but I just completely conk out for about 30 mins. A couple of weeks ago we had pizza for dinner, I had 3 slices and about an hour afterward the same thing happened & even my husband said he's never seen me do that. I feel completely overcome by this drowsiness, and am often headachey like a hangover when I wake up. Initally I was tested for coeliac but this was negative and my gp said I'm probably just very sensitive to it. But I'm really starting to wonder. I asked my gp if it was worth testing my sugars and I have an appointment this week, just a random blood test. I'm really just after some advice as to where to go with this, my gp said my last bloods taken 8 months ago were normal & he doesnt think there will be any issue.
Many thanks

It's fairly wasy to test for diabetes. Some of your signs/symptoms relate to diabetes but, could also be a variety of things. I would certainly ask your doctor for a test. Good luck and hope you feel better soon !

Hi

Thank you Mo. I know this is just a random test he's doing this week. Depending on results, it may be fine fingers crossed, is there a specific test I should ask for ? I've read about something like Ab1c ? Sorry if that's wrong

Thanks

Well, I think that will come a little later. I was recently diagnosed, I had very similar symptoms to you although I had thirst and blurred vision too. I asked the doc to specifically test me for diabetes. Initially, I just gave a urine sample which he tested straight away and confirmed high blood glucose. The blood tests etc came after. It may or may not be diabetes ( hope it's not ) but it's a quick and easy thing to find out. Good luck and keep us posted. I'm fairly new myself so notas knowledgeable as many here but feel free to ask anything and if I know the answer, I'll tell you.

Hi

Thank you. I will bear that in mind. I've not been asked for a sample yet. Will just have to wait and see what the results show. I havent noticed any extra thirstiness but I'm aware my eyesight seems to have deteriorated in the past few months, I do wear glasses but have noticed a bit of a difference at times.
Thanks for your advice Mo & all the best

Hi. Yes, the symptoms could be diabetes or something else. The random blood test should show up if you have sugar levels that are too high. If necessary he may do a GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) to double check. The HBa1C is often done around 3 months after first diagnosis and then normally annually. It has to be done by a phlebotomist and is a lab test (non-fasting). It shows the last 3 months average blood sugar and is a good test.
