Hi everyone I am 62 had type 2 for 10 years or more, managed to lose 6 stone, over those years,I look back and think how on earth did I do that. I started having problems 2 years ago with control of sugars, so was put on more Metformin and citiglyptin, sorry for spelling. Then I started having problems with what I think is nerve pain in lower legs, however I have spondylitis of the spine,so that could be the culprit.IN the last year nurse advising diet for type 2 etc.sugars still high did everything nurse said and boy can I stick to a diet, then she mentioned about low carb diet, which I discovered porridge with semi skimmed milk with a banana as well was putting my sugars to 15 on a morning.never understood carbs,I lost all my weight with calorie counting, which was popular in my day to lose weight,I realise now too many carbs,so I’m trying this way of eating now.sorry to be boring,I’m not really good at explaining things on my I pad,I’m only just getting into this technology,so her for guidance and interest reasons.

Welcome. It’s great that you have a nurse giving good information about carbs and that you can test yourself. You’ll soon see results. Are you confident about where carbs are hidden away? Would any guidance be useful?

Keep a close eye on your levels and make sure the medication gets adjusted as required as the numbers come down. You quite probably won’t need so much if you aren’t eating so many carbs. I understand sitaglyptin increases insulin release as well as decreases glucose release by the liver . Ideally most type 2 are looking to lower the insulin levels (usually high already) by having lower glucose levels and improving the body’s response to more normal insulin levels so high ones are no longer required (improving insulin sensitivity or reducing insulin resistance)

Hi Vv and welcome to the forum. Even though you aren’t new to diabetes I’ll post a link to our useful info which you may find handy:
https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.17088/
I was diagnosed about 2 1/2 years ago and was fortunate enough to find this forum straight away so I have eaten low carb since.p and successfully lost weight and controlled my diabetes. Well done on your weight loss that must have helped with your control but low carb will help you going forwards. Some methodical testing will help you see the effects of different foods. Test right before your meal and two hours after the first bite, you’re looking for a rise of no more than 2mmols/l.
Ask any questions you have, there’s always someone to help.

hi thanks for this info, the nurse put me on a tablet pioglitazone, but hard to stomach them, felt sick all the time, says I will be going on insulin if they can’t get sugars down,I really don’t want to be on insulin injections and very afraid after seeing the performance my mother had,and the times we found her on the floor.I will be gratefull for any advice on carbs to see if this works for me.A doctor once told me if I lose weight I probably won’t be diabetic at all. I lost all the weight and still am? Thanks anyway

Do you know what your numbers are like generally? Or your hb1ac? If not ask your surgery for them so you can track your own progress. Sometimes a type 2 might need insulin but it pays to try all other options first to check if it’s really necessary or not. Far too many are put on it when other options like low carb might have worked but they weren’t tried.

Eating fewer carbs would also mean smaller insulin amounts so hypos are less likely even if it does eventually come to that. Try not to worry yet about something that hopefully won’t happen anyway.

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/ might help a little, in addition to the links others gave you (dietdoctor.com is fab). It takes a little while to get your head around it, but once you do, it's relatively easy to stick to. Keep testing, keep trying, and you'll be alright. (Just steer clear of porridge and banana's for starters. ;) )

Sometimes I just put my head in my hands and sigh -
Type two diabetics cannot cope with sugars and starch - grain, potatoes and starchy veges, most fruit other than berries.
We can eat meat fish seafood eggs and cheese, full fat yoghurt - as they are low in carbs.
Salad stuff and above ground growing veges are mostly fine - I have big salads and stirfries. Only two meals a day as that is all I need, sometimes I have berries and cream, and coffee with cream.
If you need to know the carb content of a food there are books, and apps or just do a search - you need to know that in the US they include the fiber - watch for that spelling as a clue, but in the UK the fibre is listed separately.

Hi and welcome to the forum

Lots of helpful advice and people here. Are you testing regularly- i.e. before meals and 2 hours after. It is the best way to see the effect of food on your body.

You've been given advice on low carbs which I agree with. It is easy to find the carb content but probably the easiest way to start is to stick to foods that have no or very low carbs. You've been given some examples- meat, fish, eggs cheese. That minimises the thinking you have to do

Welcome.
