After introducing myself and giving background I now have questions. If anyone would be able to answer any for me that would be great, while hubby is getting info and advice from doctors I'd like to get it from real people who live through it. I'm sorry if anything I ask or say seems stupid or dumb but all so new to me.

This came out of nowhere and within a short space of time (6week's), how common is that to happen?
His blood sugar was 32 when we got to hospital, I no that's high but how high is it, I mean could he have slipped into a coma or died?
What can I do to help him, diet wise?
Are there any things I should/shouldn't do to help him?
I don't want to really bug him but need to understand more so I'm not totally useless.

Also, our 2yr old daughter... have any of you had to explain to your child why you/mummy/daddy etc stick needles in themselves 4 Times a day, if so what did you say? Right now she saw daddy and the monitors and tubes really worried her, not scared just worried cos daddy doesn't get sick.

Any help or advice would be so appreciated guys and again, sorry if I'm being dumb here.

Thank you in advance

Emma xx

As for what to say to a child, i just said this needle is there to make me feel better when i injected was harder explaining when i was living and volunteering with children who had limited english but soon as they saw me do it a few times they were fine with it and took no notice. Found it easier just to let the kids see what i was doing had a few issues with my best friends son determined to check my blood a few times he is 3 years old was 2 at the time. However now he tells me off if i have things with sugar in children pick it up quickly. So try not to panic too much hopefully the levels will settle down as its very early days.

Hi. I think many of us found our diabetes either came on quickly or the diagnosis was a surprise. The overweight, insulin resistant T2s may have it for years and it is often found by accident. The T2s/T1 s who aren't overweight or insulin resistant i.e. have a poor pancreas it may appear more quickly sometimes as an emergency. I'm generalising of course as we are all different. The risk of a coma appears when you have high blood sugar plus you aren't converting any carbs to energy and therefore have ketones from fat conversion. This is called ketoacidosis and is an emergency. A measure of 32 is bad but not always an emergency unless ketones are present; it is still damaging though if left. Look at the many links on the forum for diet. Keep the carbs high-fibre and low-GI. Perhaps below 150gm/day but as they say 'Eat to Your Meter' and decide how low you want the insulin to be as the carbs and insulin go hand in hand; the lower the insulin the lower the potential swings.

I work with kids and must say they are absolutely fine with needles and all that stuff. i think that kids adapt very quickly to new situations and are more tolerant than adults. You just need to explain them everything and be honest. Simple and short explanation works well with kids
Regarding diagnosis it was a big surprise. I started to feel very thirsty at xmas time then lost some weight in january. At the beggining of february I had more symptoms like feeling sick after every meal. in the middle of february was in hospital already. The worst were 3 days before diagnosis, feeling very tired and vomitting after meals. I think though that i had some symptoms much earlier especially blurred vision. Visited 2 different ophthalmologist, my gp and specsavers and nobody had an idea what wrong was with my eyes. i still cant understand how its possible that they didnt suspect diabetes!
