Hi @Camelia007 , welcome to the forum.

What are you currently doing to treat your diabetes with? Are you on medication?

And why are you hungry, are you eating enough?

What are your goals? low carb or calorie deficit?

you must eat enough for needs.

Thank you. No treatment just diet change for now. Have cut out red meat, crisps, potatoes, pasta, rice, bread and wine. Portion controlling everything i eat but am eating very little healthy meals and snacks.

Goals are weight loss and sugar reduction. I think i am still shocked by the diagnosis and also my body is getting use to the withdrawal of no red meat, crisps, potatoes, pasta, rice, bread and wine. Eating lots of blueberries, salads and fish which i do enjoy.

ok, chill.

Look for low GI carbs, brown rice, sweet potato whole grains.
Bulk meals with above ground veg, gives volume and feel full.
You will feel worse if you crash your metabolism - eat sensible.

Its hard to not react to the shock but you must eat enough to function.

PS don't over do the protein or it will also sugar. bulk on veg.

Many of our members have reduced their blood sugar to healthy levels by only watching the carbs, not the calories. And many of those found that they lost weight as well that way, which is much easier to sustain than forcing yourself to go hungry.

Red meat and wine won't make your BG go up by the way.
If you like to have a look at what others are eating (ranging from almost no carb to a moderately low carb diet) with some friendly chat, you can have a read around this thread: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/what-have-you-eaten-today.75781/page-2646#post-2559838

oh gosh thanks. Any guidance you can give on a monitor or app?

Many of us find that those products still make us rise a lot. Do you use a glucose meter before and after meals to see how you react to them?
No because as T2 I try not to get too focused on regular bloods. I also exercise a lot but in general if you hungry and crashing your metabolism is also not the best way forward.

If I ate that my BGs would spike and stay high for a while. GI has very little impact on my BG - I can't even detect any slowing of absorption. If this works for you, fine, but please remember that we all tend to react differently?

As a demonstration of this, I eat mainly meat and dairy with some green veg. There's plenty of fat in that. I average about 20g carbs/day. That works for me both in terms of weight loss and BG control.

Hi @Camelia007 and thanks for the tag @Antje77

Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

HOME HEALTH have the Gluco Navii, which is a fairly new model and seems to be getting good reviews if you use this link and select the meter plus 5 packs of strips, and then add the code dcuk (all lower case) at check out you may get money off, I’m not sure if this code is still valid.

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-produ...ose-meter-test-strips-choose-mmol-l-or-mg-dl/

Links to the strips for future orders:

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/glucose-navii-blood-glucose-test-strips-50-strip-pack/

There are also discount codes for when you come to buy more strips - "navii5" and "navii10" will give you 20% off purchases of 5 packs of strips and 25% off 10 packs of strips respectively. Again I’m not sure if these codes are still valid.

Then they sell the older SD Code Free, details to be found here!

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/codefree-blood-glucose-monitoring-system-mmoll-or-mgdl/

Discount codes for the Code Free strips, again I haven’t used them in a while.

5 packs 264086
10 packs 975833

SPIRIT HEALTHCARE have a meter called the Tee2 + which is quite popular however I haven’t been able to find it on their website lately.

(Old link which doesn’t work for me now but maybe works for you, if it doesn’t try the phone number below
https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...e2-blood-glucose-meter?variant=19264017268793 ) or Google it and you’ll find it’s available from other outlets.

The strips are to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...py-of-tee2-test-strips?variant=19264017367097

Some members have got a free Tee2+ by phoning up to order, with a large order of strips they often throw the meter in for free:

Phone number 0800 8815423

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

When I started I was recording my food in carb manager app, and my bg in the app that comes with the sensor. Mysgr (mysugr?) does similar I think
It really is the best way of knowing what works for your body and what doesn't matter. We are all different.
I for example seem to be able to tolerate a little proper ice cream withouta major rise, but I single piece of bread of any colour sends me sky high.
Yes the pricking and recording can be a nuisance but it is only for a few weeks and is so worth doing to lay down guidelines for life.

Whilst I agree going hungry isn’t the way forward nor does it mean eating the foods you list. Replacing carbs with more veg, meat, fish (fats and proteins) avoids both hunger and high blood glucose.

As a type 2 not knowing what my levels are doing would mean having no idea what each type of food was doing and the likes of many lower GI carbs, brown rice, sweet potato whole grains raise me by unacceptable amounts.

If you don’t test on what basis are you recommending them? If it’s because it’s standard (dated) diabetes advice I’d ask yourself if perhaps this poor advice is the very reason type 2 is seen as progressive and requires ever increasing amounts of medication.
