Hi I'm Kim :)

I've been type one diabetic for 5 years...I don't know anyone else with diabetes and have decided to join this sight for some support and to hopefully chat to people who've gone through similar experiences

Hi Kim and welcome :) Its great to have this forum. Apart from a little girl who is 6 i dont know anyone with diabetes. At least here we can chat and learn from others

Alot of people I've seen on here have had trouble with carb counting courses and getting pumps especially in scotland. Pump is brilliant, had through nhs and all tubing, cannulas supplied by roche through the nhs. Was diagnosed approx 2.5 years ago using mdi and pumping for about 8 months now. Only downside really is having a box attached 24/7, but worth it

I've considered saving up to buy one but £3000 is rather steep.....I just think my sugars would be a whole lot steadier and I would have much better control if I had one but I suppose we just need to manage as best we can :)

For me I had alot of problems on mdi. loads of hypos from exercise and high sugars in the morning. Couldn't get a basal dose to suit. Looking at my hourly basal rates on my pump it would of been impossible lol.
How are your levels day to day?

Not great, lots of highs and lows. I work variable shifts so start anytime between 8am-2pm and finish anytime between 5pm and 10pm. 9 hour shifts per day and shift changes every 5 days. Breaks vary day to day so eating/injecting times alter too. Work in a call centre so it's not easy to eat or inject at my desk.

Definitely, I never had any issues with control when I worked in my last job, only worked 9-5 though...yes injecting at my desk is difficult As is checking my sugar

Have your employers suggested anything to help you. One suggestion would be to work out your different shift patterns and have a guaranteed break every two hours to allow you to test and record regular readings for different shifts. they should do this anyway as per guidelines but....not that easy in real life situations.

i've raised the issue with them, applied for a set shift and an additional daily break (unpaid) but they've declined both suggestions, stating that 'the business cant support it' They just think that there must be an easy fix or something i can change to make everything better...if only lol

Test, record, adjust if needed, test, record and so on. how often do you test at the mo.
It does get very monotonous at times and easy to think cba, but it really is a must.
