Hi guys , my name is Tanya and i was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 at the end of last year , i was given metformin to take and worked my way up to 2000 mg per day, 2 in the morning , 2 with the evening meal , however this gave me awful stomach issues so i was changed onto the slow release which seemed to do the trick , however they are really struggling to get my blood sugar under control with metformin and my latest hba1c was appalling so my GP said !! he is sending me for another one to double check the levels , but currently im struggling to get my sugars below 12 mmol/L even at bedtime . my highest reading today was 13.1 !! , to say the least i feel bloody awful , obviously the doctor sais be mindful of your diet but to be honest i have no clue what to avoid eating... well apart from the obvious sugary **** ect ....i love plain pasta and chicken and fish potatoes ect and eat them most weeks , but im really in the dark of what foods to avoid ect ....

i am also a bit confused at my GPs latest comment that if my blood sugars arent coming under control through oral drugs and are staying that high i may well not be a type 2 at all .... what does that mean ... that im a type 1 ? can that happen ? can they confuse the 2 ....

also since being diagnosed i have really struggled to lose weight , at the minute i am quite overweight and was doing very well with the weight loss but since ive had issues with my sugar it doesnt seem to be happening , i also seem to have a major issue with water retention .... my legs and feet mostly ... is this from my diabetes ?? ..... to be honest im so confused and could really do with some advice from anyone !!!!

thanks !!!

Tanya

hi. your Dr means you might be type 1 or type 1.5, they can do blood tests to work it all out, either way you're diabetic

I'm glad you've got a meter

next is to cut grain, grain product and potato and get the weight and BG under control

Hi Tanya,

you are definitely in the right place to get the help and support you are after. Since being diagnosed and joining the forum I have read lots of very very helpful posts and believe I am lucky in that my BG's are under control, so much so that I only test before and 2hrs after meals now.

As for diet, I would suggest Low Carb and High Fat and use MyFitnessPal to work out the amount of calories to have per day whilst recording how many carbs you eat and to help you restrict the amount.

I thought it would be really hard to cope with such a restriction but I am finding it much easier than I thought I would and have managed to lose 14lb since diagnosis. Some people lose weight faster than that but I am more than happy with the weight loss so far even though I have 8 - 10 stone still to lose.

There will be plenty of people to help you keep on the straight and narrow so I wish you luck on your journey.

Hugs,

Dee

Thankyou so much for the info !!! that helps so much !!! :) feel a little better now thankyou !!

you will be fine, you will feel like a new person when your BG is under control
if you do go low carb, the starvation lasts 2 days, the cravings can go for a week.
what got me through the first week was eating a teaspoon or few of coconut oil when the symptoms struck, but any fat/oil will do, even mix butter with peanut butter. anything except eating a carb

Hi and welcome. As you are overweight it is more likely that you are T2 with insulin resistance. Late onset T1 which is always possible is usually but not always associated with being slim and losing weight before diagnosis. The latter is due to the islet cells failing to produce enough insulin. Metformin although a good drug doesn't have a great effect on blood sugar levels and diet is the key. You need to keep the carbs down and I would set an initial target of 150gm/day and see how you go. I personally would say LC but not necessarily HF. You need enough fat to give you the calories you need but too much may start to hinder weight loss so bear that in mind. Proteins and veg are fine as well as some fruit but avoid bananas.
