I was diagnosed with diabetes yesterday. I have CKD stage 3 and felt unwell for a while. I had 2 blood tests and a a1 which was abnormal. I was given a diet sheet for now and a blood tester! The nurse showed me how to use it and told me to keep a record because it will help me control it. NOW WHAT!!! How do I stop the sweats and shakes and bad temper? How do I stop feeling hungry all the time? How do I stop the dizzy sick feeling that happens now and then for no reason? What's with the blood tester because the samples all look fine to me unless I have nothing to eat then they are high. EG 1 test is 4 next 8.9 then 7,8 then 5 then 8.8 eat then 4.5 I think that is all normal. Average is 7.8 Whats wrong with that. I don.t think that is diabetic.

Confused.

Re: Newby type 2 insulin rsistant

Hi
Welcome to the forum. I know what you mean about being confused. We all have been there at some point. It will get better. You have come to the best diabetic site on the web. We are good at providing you with the information you need and support.

I will concentrate on the Diabetes aspect for now. Do you know what your intial HbA1c level was ?

As a T2 the NICE guideline blood glucose level figures are as follows.
Fasting (waking)..................between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals..................no more than 8.5 mmol/l.
If you are able to get the post meal numbers lower so much the better.

You need to test on waking, before meals and then for now 2 hrs after meals. Record those readings and also keep a food diary so that you can note down what you ate and when. You will then begin to see what certain foods do to your Bg levels and take action to correct that.

You may not think that you are a Diabetic but that is what your diagnosis was. If you are unhappy with that then ask for a second opinion ? Which brings me to the next point.

There is no way I would even attempt to advise you on the CKD issue. Are you being seen by a specialist ? If so then that is good. If not you need to get a referral to one soon. A specialist is the person to sort out the problems which have complications.

Dont try to rush things. Take it one step at a time. Don't be rushed into trying to get much lower yet. Understand what is going on and what you need to do to get some sort of control first. That will help you come to terms with this. Then we can help you improve things step by step.

Re: Newby type 2 insulin rsistant

Hi Heavensoul,

Sorry to hear abot your diagnosis of Type 2. People on this forum will be very helpful in helping you to get things under control.

You will find that the lowest readings will be those before you eat a meal. After you have eaten, your blood glucose levels will then rise depending on how much sugar or carbohydrate that you eat -this rise can be over a few hours - the highest reading is usually about an hour after you have finished eating. After that the level drops again and so on each time that you eat a meal.

Don't know anything about CKD or even what it is.

Best wishes - John

Re: Newby type 2 insulin rsistant

Hi cugila, thanx for the reply.

Firstly, I have no idea what the hba1c test result was. The doctor just said it was abnormal but she expected it to be so. She also said that it showed it was under control and not to worry. She is also watching my liver as it shows abnormal readings.

It would seems that I have been doing the tests all wrong. The Doctor said take a blood sample before and after a meal so I did just that, straight after the meal with no waiting. she never told me to wait a few Hrs. That will throw my average of 7.8 out a bit. Am I thick or what.

What is the best time to do the tests?

The doctor told me I have what she calls Hypos but I can usually spot them and I eat something to feel better.

I have told the doctor about how I feel about not being diabetic but she was a bit cross with me and told me that she is not going to do more tests. She said "You are diabetic and we are not going to change it. Follow the diet sheet and do your blood tests. Take up swimming, eat less protein and eat more slow release carb"s and veg and you will live longer." She is very strict with me and pulls no punches.

The doctor told me I am diabetic [have Hypos] because my kidneys do not work as they should. My CKD was caused through High Blood Pressure. My CKD is now under control but could shift to stage 4 at any time. Fingers crossed that it will not happen because I do not want to go down the Dialysis road.

My work have told me that I can not do my job anymore and I will be re deployed to another job. If they can't find me an easier job by November 24th they will retire me from work. Posh word for the SACK.

So very soon I will be poorly and skint. Oh well!!! C,est La Vie.
.
I am glad I found this site and I am sure that with your help I will get the hang of the Blood Testing and dieting.

You would have to ask the GP what the reading was. It is part of your medical records and you are entitled to know.

No....YOU are not thick. I think that describes whoever it was who didn't give you the correct information !! Makes me so angry.

Test as soon as you wake up before any food. Then immediately prior to a meal, then 2hrs after meals. Test also just before bedtime. That will do for the moment.

Unfortunately, there are many GP's who think they are some sort of gods ? Is there another GP in the Practice you could go to ? Either way YOU have to be more assertive and get a second opinionif you are not convinced. Having said that it is sometimes easier said than done !! You are entitled to ask for a second opinion, it is your right. Trouble is they are not obliged to get you one, sometimes you have to be more forthright and like her....pull no punches.

You have rights under Employment and Disability Law's which are complex. I would suggest that you get in touch with your local CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau) as soon as possible to get good up to date and correct advice. Have used them myself and they usually offer an excellent free service. Here is a link to their website.
Start there.

We hope so. Just keep asking those questions. We will give you answers. One thing I should have said earlier is that it is very easy to get into denial....? Sometimes we do have to trust a diagnosis. We have all doubted things at times. Try for that second opinion, then if it confirms the diagnosis. Well, then it's just something you have to deal with.

Re: Newby type 2 insulin rsistant

Hi
H-S
I was once told I had CKD stage 3. Actually, I didn't and by tightening up on my BG control, I have eliminated all symptoms. My type 1 diabetic husband has quite advanced kidney disease and is on several treatments. They even prescribed him EPO, Which costs £635 per pre loaded syringe and is delivered by refrigerated courier van. I have managed to help him get better control of the blood glucose and he no longer needs the EPO.
We now have 6 syringes of EPO in the fridge, which the pharmacist told me will be destroyed if we hand it in.
So to avoid such catastrophic waste, I'm going to give it to my vet brother. Animals use it too.
Anyway, back to the point.
If you can get TIGHT control of the blood glucose, things may very well improve.
Ken has given you the target figures, I believe in keeping lower than the highest figure quoted as near as possible to the lower ones.
Hana.

Thanks for all your kind words and advice.

I feel better already LOL. I have listened to your comments and have started doing the test just before a meal and 2 hrs after (if I can remember) The readings are much higher now. I had a Pizza for lunch yesterday and my blood level was 12.3 after 3 hrs because I forgot to do it. So no more pizza for me. I knew it was bad because I felt bad after it, sweating like mad and a thumping headache. I hate that.

I have ordered a book called "The insulin resistant diet" I hope it helps me with the carb's

How is it that my blood level is highest first thing in a morning before food? This morning it was 9.9 After I eat it goes down to 7.8 Very strange. Later, it goes up again. The longer I go without food the higher it gets and the worse I feel.

I have totally changed my eating habit and I have started right off by halving my food intake, cutting out all sugar such as cakes, sweets, sugar etc. I have stopped eating white bread and have a little wholemeal bread; 1 slice. I now have only 2 small new spuds and 2 veg with a bit of fish or lamb. I will get more creative with the menu as I go along.

I eat every 4 hrs now as the doctor prescribed. She said "Little and often." I think that will help. After following her advice yesterday I did not feel all that hungry. However, because I messed up (sorry the Doctor messed up) I will not know how well it works for a few days yet because I have to re-test all over again. Good job the doctor gave me 50 strips. By the way, the doctor told me she has no problem giving me more strips as long as I don't go mad with them. Whatever MAD means lol.

Things are looking up now and I feel more optimistic about my future.

The way I do it to make certain I don't forget is to set the alarm on my mobile just after I've stopped eating and then again for the next test - and so on.

It drives my wife crackers but it works for me!

John,
I use my mobile and it drives my wife nuts as well.
I told her, "I'm not doing it to annoy you. That's just a bonus!"
It works for me too.
