Newly diagnosed and scared

Hello All,

I'm 31 and have just been diagnosed with T2D. It's my own fault, at diagnosis I weighed 150kg. I have just had 2 babies and I'm scared I won't be able to be the father they need in the future. I've started trying for weight loss, aiming for remission (as I know this is the best route I have available to me) and since November I've gone from 150kg to 136.2kg, and my target is <100kg by October, and then 80kg is the end goal. However, I HATE the diet. Carbs are my weakness; I love pasta, pizza, a sandwich, etc).

1) If I manage to achieve remission and maintain the weight loss, will I be able to eat these things (granted in moderation) again?
2) Can remission be maintained for good? I read somewhere that insulin sensitivity increases the longer you've been in remission?

Thanks

Hi, welcome to the forum.

You are a bit younger than me, but I lost about 45kg, and I'm in remission. I now eat sandwiches, rice and pasta, etc. and have had a couple of slices of pizza. Going very low carb wasn't difficult for me at the start, and the early weight loss was quite fast. I then started to have more carbs. As I understand it, for standard type 2, as long as you remain at a healthy weight, you should stay in remission.

Out of interest, what was your HbA1c result? I had my blood test today, and will get the result next week.

Hi Ian,

It was picked up when I registered at my new GP's and they did a blood test; 59 initially and then they retested and it came back as 60.

That was before Christmas and I started working on reducing my weight immediately, although I did fall off the wagon during the festive period. I'm firmly back on it now.

Thanks

Congrats on the amazing weight loss :)

Tagging @KennyA who has been in remission for a number of years.

Is there something in particular that your missing eating? could be worth checking out the recipes section which has some relatively low carb recipes inclusive of pasta/pizza's and breads which may assist.

I used to love supernoodles .. recently bought https://www.hollandandbarrett.com/s...ero-carb-noodles-270g-6100002066?skuid=064746 added a little veg stock alongside some curry powder and a few other herbs and spices actually has more flavour than batchelors super noodles ever did!

Holland and barrets have a fair few other zero/low carb menu items available. Their tagliatelle is pretty decent too goes really well with bolongnese with a little cheese ontop.

One thing I found useful were the free trials of both Libre and Dexcom CGMs. I think @Rachox has the links for these should you be interested. Good luck.

Hi Grant,

Thanks :)

Baked potatoes, carbonara, lasagna are my 3 favourite foods. Had a look at H&B and it's just the price that stops me from going there. Family of 5 it quickly becomes unsustainable for us :(

It's NOT your fault that you are ill, so stop blaming yourself. Illness is - plenty of people eat the way you did and don't become diabetic. But now your body has told you, it's time to act on it. Find new favourite foods, and eat those. You've done brilliantly on the weight loss. Stay with us, read around the forum and come back with any questions. No question is trivial - if you want to ask, we want to help. Well done so far.

Thanks for that, it's hard going but just looking for advice and hope. Really appreciated

yeah some things from there are fairly expensive. When i make spag bol for daugher and myself, i make the bolognese for both of us, then just use 2 different pots for the pasta part, makes it a lot more affordable.

lasagna i love, when make it, i use thin aubergine layers with cheese sauce. I buy a couple of large roasting tins when make, just use regular pasta sheets for hers. doesnt add a lot of time, although is a sorta faff at times (if in a rush). Found it easier to batch cook certain things and freeze. Cheese sauce part and bolognese is exact same for both of us. only takes a few extra mins prep.

That sounds reasonable and doable for us, do you have to order online from h&b or are these ingredients readily available in store?

With the lasagna, do you know of any alternatives to aubergine? Can't stand it!

Thanks!

i live pretty remotely dont have one in my area. when i pop across to mainland haven't had an issue with the 3 different stores that have tried for their zero carb rice/pasta. I have had problem in the smaller shops for some of their keto multispack snacks.. usually single only available and more or less price of 2 would be multipack of 4 cost. only the larger city centre store appears to have some certain products.

https://madcreationshub.com/recipe/keto-pasta-recipe/ could try make that. just roll fairly flat. can swap out aubergine with something like egg, if you like it, mix 8-10 large eggs place into lined baking tray oven for 14-18 mins at 200degrees c. just experiment a little i'm sure you'll find something suitable that you will enjoy.

You could try thin strips of courgette, use a potato peeler to make the slices or a sharp knife.

I also use shredded cabbage or green beans as a carrier for sauces. I can’t eat the konjac noodles etc they kill my stomach & trigger my diverticula disease.

Mashed celeriac is a great replacement for mashed potatoes or cubed & roasted in place of roasties.

Lidl now sell protein pasta, it's lower carb than the standard pasta as it is based on pulses. It is in spaghetti and tagliatelle format. I particularly like the tagliatelle, which is chickpea based. I eat less in uncooked weight than I did with wheat pasta as it is more filling.
