Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi all, firstly I would like to say how much this forum has helped. I was newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes 2 weeks ago and I am finding it extremely hard to take in. My anxiety is through the roof but discussions such as blurry eyes and how life can become as normal as possible has helped me cope. I do have a question which I hope people can help with, in terms of symptoms I have had a few hypos over the last couple of days, easily managed with fizzy drinks and not as scary as I thought they would be. I was sat on the sofa last night and my feet where extremely cold, I went to bed warned them up and had a slight burning sensation. When I have woke up today I can only describe the feeling in my big toe on my left foot as a dull ache - still have sensitivity but a dull ache. Should I be worried? A lot of the symptoms I think I am experiencing at present is in my head due and but after doing the dreaded 'Google self diagnosis' search they does seem to be a lot of symptoms around diabetes diagnosis with feet.

I would like to thank you all in advance, brilliant community and look forward to being more involved in the future when I get my head around things.

Many thanks,

Michael

Hi @michael88 and welcome to the forum. As a newly diagnosed Type 1, you are very unlikely to have been running particularly high blood glucose levels for a prolonged period prior to your diagnosis, and as a result, it's highly unlikely that you have developed any form of nerve damage so far.

It's more likely to be totally unrelated, but, you may be experiencing something that a few people get when their blood glucose levels normalise after diagnosis, which is an aggravation of the nerves, and is only temporary.

As I said, welcome and enjoy the ride!

Welcome to the forum. Sorry it's not under better circumstances.

I'm 27 myself and was diagnosed last year with T1. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Although Google has its uses I wouldn't believe everything you read on there.

Give it a day or two and if things don't improve with your toe see your gp or podiatrist, not everything is diabetes related so your better getting it checked out if the symptoms persists.

As for your anxiety and stress levels @michael88, the first few weeks & months on diagnosis are by far the worst as there's so much information to take in, but it does get easier in time and there's no reason why you can't live a long and healthy life provided you take care of yourself, we have members on the forum who have lived with type 1 for several decades and have lead a very full & active life.

Take care.

Thank you everyone, really appreciate it. My toes have returned to normal - I've not suffered with anxiety before and it's weird how your mind can play tricks. As previously mentioned you all have helped me to calm my nerves and put into practice coping mechanisms to make sure it doesn't take over my life and is just part of me so cannot thank you enough.

Hi and welcome. Glad to hear the symptoms are fading. I assume you are on a Basal/Bolus insulin regime? If you haven't yet started carb-counting, starting it will help reduce the hypos. Do talk to your DN if needed or come back here for more help. It will take a while to get the insulins balanced.

Hi @Daibell thank you for the info, I'm trying to learn the carb counting, past few readings have all been around the 4.5 - 6 mark so seems to be going well (touch wood) at present. I don't think I've been factoring in the warm weather at present and the exercise which has been why my hypos have been a little more regular at present. I've always been someone to skip breakfast and have a cereal bar for lunch then really eat a lot for tea so it's a case of spreading the carb intake over the 3 meals now rather than scoffing a days amount at tea time haha. Can anyone recommend an app or book for the carb counting as a novice? Thanks again everyone feeling a lot more positive today!

Hi again. I think others have suggested a book called 'Carbs and Cals' which is supposed to be quite good. Others may post suggestions.
