Hi all just wanted to introduce myself, i'm Lynn and have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes today

Hi Lynn, aka angelynnie

Welcome to the forum. You'll find a friendly bunch here, also a lot of knowledge and experience. When you've just been diagnosed, it can be quite scary and you may feel overwhelmed with all the information given to you at first. You will find out what to read and what you feel comfortable with.

I'm Type 2 as well, have been diagnosed a few years ago but only the last year have I managed to get my blood glucose levels within a better range, mostly because of testing.

It's unfortunate that GPs won't give out blood sugar meters and prescribe test strips, saying that Type 2s don't need to test! Well, I don't know how they expect you to be able to control your levels if you don't have the tools with which to do it. Many type 2 buy their own meter and test strips with a view to managing their diabetes better, in spite of the GP or Diabetes Nurse telling you not to ;)

Good luck on your journey, you'll meet lots of us on your way, all of us being different and unique :)

Hi Lynn and welcome to the forum, it is an excellent place for advice and information. It's quite a shock when first diagnosed and there is so much to learn. Take your time and read as much as you want. I can guarantee that over the next few weeks and months you will be taking control and have more energy and feeling better overall. Good luck on your journey,

Where is the best place to buy a blood sugar meter and test strips please

Hi Lynne

It seems the SD Codefree is recommended here. It's less expensive than others, just as accurate, and the test strips are the cheapest to buy. Someone recently (maybe today) posted that they got the test strips from Amazon. This site promotes the Codefree and, I think, sells it on line via the Shop.

Maybe Google it, see what the cost is in differing outlets, check the price of test strips too, before making your decision. Compare prices of other meters and test strips too, if you like to do that but, bear in mind, even if a meter is cheaper, the test strips are the on-going cost to you, hence check out the prices for these too.

I'll have a look and find a link for you ...

[Edit] Here's the link for Diabetes.co.uk re the SD Codefree http://www.diabetes.co.uk/blood-glucose-meters/sd-codefree-blood-glucose-meter.html It gives an explanation re this device etc which is worth reading. Then the 'Buy Now' link takes you to Amazon ;) £12.99 for Starter kit, £7.99 for 50 strips, can't remember the price of the Lancets but most folks use the same lancet for a varying amout of time, in fact, so you don't need so many as strips ;) Julie

Hi Lynn

I was diagnosed with type 2, a couple of weeks ago.

I recently purchased the SD codefree from Amazon & the strips are available from there & Ebay.

Hi Lynn,

Welcome!

The shock and feelings of doom will pass and everyone is very supportive here. Get a meter and testing strips as soon as you can. Are you on diet and exercise only, or have you been prescribed Metformin?

I have an SD Codefree - it's vital!
