Hi everyone
I have just got off the phone to my GP and been told I am now diabetic with a score of 52.
I am really annoyed with myself for playing Russian roulette with my pre diabetic status and my Dr who has been really blasé about my numbers increasing slowly but Iv only got myself to blame. Im now feeling a bit freaked out that finally Im in the range and dont know what to do other than cut carbs and sugar out?
I do a fairly active job as a gardener but my eating has been out of control lately and Iv been constantly hungry so have piled the weight on.
Any advice gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum .

Have a read of the link in my signature .

Get yourself a meter. Your doctor will tell you you don't need it. You do. Read around and ask questions.

Sounds like you do know what to do. I was a similar level when diagnosed, just cut out sweet things and cut down or out obvious carbs and I was back to prediabetic at the next test. Get a meter, apart from anything else, it gives you encouragement when you see your BG coming down.

Another reason for hunger and weight increase is that your body, being insulin resistant, cant use insulin to process the carbs you eat, your body thinks you need more, you crave more and eat more, but your body cant process it again. So dont blame your self completely! A month or two before diagnosis I had exactly the same and was getting home from work and eating a whole tray of potatoes at dinner or 3 packets of crisps or 4 bits of toast or possibly all three on a bad evening.
I have to take some of the blame, my lack of will power wont have helped but I'm genetically disposed to t2. Many of my mums side had t2. So be kind to yourself and try not to feel guilty. Just make a fresh start.
Yes, cutting carbs is the best way to get that number down. 52 is really just over the edge into t2. I was nearly double that at diagnosis.
You should be able to make changes that will help bring your numbers down quickly. Keep on here and keep reading as there is excellent advice.

Thank you so much for your response and I know 52 is low but I really want to reverse it if I can. Iv had 24hours of focus I just hope I can keep it up. Thanks again!

Thanks for your response. I keep seeing people talking about meters but what kind of meter and where do I get one from? Many thanks again

Hi @Visualiza and welcome to the forum!

Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

Spirit Healthcare have a meter with cheap strips, the Tee2 + found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-plus-blood-glucose-meter/

with the strips found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-testing-strips/

Some members have got a free Tee2+ by phoning up to order, with a large order of strips they often throw the meter in for free:

Phone number 0800 8815423

With more expensive strips is their Caresens Dual which I currently use, this one has the advantage of glucose and ketone testing in one machine, it’s to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/collections/caresens-dual

Home Health have recently bought out this one, but I haven’t heard any reviews yet, links to strips and the meter:

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/glucose-navii-blood-glucose-test-strips-50-strip-pack/

There are also discount codes for when you come to buy more strips - "navii5" and "navii10" will give you 20% off purchases of 5 packs of strips and 25% off 10 packs of strips respectively (these are printed on a business card supplied with the meter).

And to be totally transparent I used to use the SD Code Free from Home Health which has the cheapest strips available if bought in quantities of 5 or 10 pots with the codes below. However I found it to be becoming less and less reliable. Here it is for anyone wanting to give it a go, just bear in mind it seems they are replacing it with the Navii, details above.

and here for the extra strips

http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Seems to me like you already know what to do. You've already been given the Nutritional Thingy link, but from the sound of it there's not much new for you in there. Sugars and carbs (alright, technically sugars are carbs), are key. Toss those out and lock the diabetes out with it. :)

You'll be okay. Stop kicking yourself around. ;)
