3 months ago I was told I had type 2, was prescribed numerous medication, so decided I would try and.go into.remission by working on my food intake, because of other medical.problems I have been in a.hospital bed.for nearly 2 years only getting out to.go.to the bathroom and eat, nurses coming in every day to change dressings.I managed to.put on over.2 stone. So needed to try and work hard ,I am still very overweight Lymphodemia In both legs do.not help at all, but so far managed to.loose 2 and a half stone.

I have my first blood tests next week to check.sugar levels, not looking.forward to it at all as I really do.not want to.start taking medication if the tests come back.high.What else can I do,any help.or.suggesting would really be appreciated.

Only just had a phone call.last week to ask if I wanted to attend a discussion group understanding your condition. So far had to buy books to understand what the condition is, nurse at doctors very nice but.Only had a 15 minute chat when first told and was told to just take medication.

Has anyone else managed to go into remission and.not take medication?

Hi and welcome : )

Are you self testing with a glucose meter? This is what helped me find out the foods that were causing blood glucose spikes.

A lot of people here in this forum were able to get into normal ranges by minimizing the amount of carbohydrates.

Have you reduced the carbs in your diet? Many of us take Metformin which is a very safe drug and helps a bit with the BS

No never done self testing would not know what to do, can you buy a test kit?.I bought a really good.book on how to manage your diabetic also lots of recipes on this site which have been great.I am a very strict vegetarian do.not eat any diary ,been doing this for.over 50 years,do not.drink.or.smoke, because of other medical problems I just don't get around very well.

Thanks for the tag @MrsA2 and hi @RosemaryB

Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

HOME HEALTH have the Gluco Navii, which is a fairly new model and seems to be getting good reviews if you use this link and select the meter plus 5 packs of strips, and then add the code dcuk (all lower case) at check out you may get money off, I’m not sure if this code is still valid.

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-produ...ose-meter-test-strips-choose-mmol-l-or-mg-dl/

Links to the strips for future orders:

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/glucose-navii-blood-glucose-test-strips-50-strip-pack/

There are also discount codes for when you come to buy more strips - "navii5" and "navii10" will give you 20% off purchases of 5 packs of strips and 25% off 10 packs of strips respectively. Again I’m not sure if these codes are still valid.

Then they sell the older SD Code Free, details to be found here!

Discount codes for the Code Free strips

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

SPIRIT HEALTHCARE

They have a meter called the Tee2 + which is quite popular however I haven’t been able to find it on their website lately.

(Old link which doesn’t work for me but maybe works for you, if it doesn’t try the phone number below

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...e2-blood-glucose-meter?variant=19264017268793 )

The strips are to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...py-of-tee2-test-strips?variant=19264017367097

Some members have got a free Tee2+ by phoning up to order, with a large order of strips they often throw the meter in for free:

Phone number 0800 8815423

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Hello and welcome @RosemaryB

I am a type 2 who has gone into remission and is on no medications.

So I will start by saying that the first step is to get a meter and test regularly. This is the only way you will know what effect the steps you take are having on your levels.

So I achieved it by going very low carb. This may be a bit more challenging as a vegetarian but can still be done. I recommend you look at the vegetarian part of the site for some suggestions.

Personally I aim for less than 10 grams of carbs a day though lately it has been getting up to 15 grams some days. So that's my carb intake. Some manage to get into remission with a higher level of carb intake. It really depends on you, your body and a way of life that you can sustain.

Good luck and welcome.

Hi RosemaryB, I agree buy a test kit, test first thing in the morning, just before a meal and 2 hours after. That way you will see what spikes you so allow you to cut out or down those items. It takes a bit of time but is worth it and no it's not painful.

I also have other medical conditions and don't have much mobility, not fun is it! Thankfully I am not bedbound and sorry to hear you are (((hugs))). But it can be done and it sounds as if you are determined to do it.

Looking forward to reading more of your posts x

Testing is helpful - I determined that ordinary onions would spike my blood sugar, but leeks and shallots are okay. Without testing, I would have assumed I should avoid everything in the onion family, which would be sad!
