I didn't see it all cos I was in the kitchen when it came on but there was an NHS hospital chef on THIS MORNING with Phil Scofield and Holly Willoughby. Because of complaints about hospital food, particularly for the elderly, he had designed some hospital meals which he made up like 'cocktails' in glasses, which were nourishing and could be eaten easily by the elderly and disabled. As I said, I didn't see the whole thing, just caught the tail end but will watch it again on itv i player later on.

The main thing is - this is the NHS - and its a response to complaints about FOOD served in hospitals. You never know, we might get the message through about DIABETIC DIETARY REQUIREMENTS yet!!! :D

Is this a sign of what could be achieved with qualified chefs working and thinking in our NHS kitchens as opposed to meal heaters managed on profit?

WE won't get appropriate diabetic foods in hospitals until the NHS realises that a high carb diet doesn't work.
To do that, a LOt of people would have to show humility. That will be hard. Perhaps now the AHEAD sudy has been prematurely cut, they might think again.

And whos message would that be Grace? Yours? Mine? or any of the other 2.5 million UK diabetics who all manage their diabetes using their own diets.

I doubt their are two diabetics on this forum who eat the same diet. You have to remember that the NHS has to cater for everyone and that is never going to be easy on the budget they have, and dont forget either that the NHS is almost bankrupt as are most of the NHS hospitals.

When I was last in hospital nearly 6 years ago now my wife brought my food in every day as the hospital slop was inedible and was before I was diabetic.

Not saying its right, just being realistic...

The problem is the NHS think they have it right now. I admit, I am very concerned about any time where I may find myself in an NHS hospital. It's easy to say if we go private we may be listened to, but I have not been in hospital since diagnosis, so don't know if even a private hospital would be better. There again, WHY should diabetics have to use private hospitals, just to get a correct diet? We shouldn't.

Like Hana said, to get things turned around is going to take a lot of back peddling and humility and I really don't see that happening any time soon, sadly.

Well obviously Sid, I'd like MY message to be heard along with everyone elses whose been heard so far. I think that's fair, don't you? So, diet would include ALL diabetic preferences, INCLUDING the ones who DON'T eat carbs. And it wouldn't take much at all to ask a patient "Do you eat carbs or not?" People are asked if they're vegetarian, it's quite simple to work with. Just give people a menu and give them what they tick, if that's 2 portions of meat plus 1 portion of veg, then so be it. No need for a song and dance about it.

Let's remember this is NOT a case of being picky about food Sid, this is a case of SOME diabetics CAN'T tolerate carbs so it's MEDICAL NECESSITY. I would have thought in hospital of all places that would be the place to EXPECT to be given the right food for your illness. I'm sure the NHS wouldn't put an alcoholic on an alcohol drip would they? Nor would they give coeliacs glutenous foods. Hospitals are not just places for doling out meds to people. FOOD is a medicine too and the wrong kind can KILL. The NHS needs to shape up on that issue.

Go for it Grace !

I must say that I LOVE the idea of an alcohol drip ! ( Vodka and Soda )

Book me in immediately ! Oh and lashings of double cream and your soup !

Paradise !

Bugga! I bought the soda today and forgot the bloody Vodka! :x

But yeah ... I think I'll patent my soup and flog it to the NHS to be drip fed to diabetics. I could get myself a little trolley with squeaky wheels and take tubs of it round the waiting rooms. I could put a sign on my trolley - 'Gracie's Gorgeous Grub' ... there ya go!

Keep off of the tonic water it's making you forgetful ! Stick to Vodka or Bolli !

Love the tubs of soup idea, you really might have something there. Perhaps you could dicuss a contract with the hospital caterers.

Exactly Hana! The last time is was in for almost a week (in HDU) the separate diabetic menu might just as well form part of a bakery counter. It would have been hopeless even trying to eat sensibly if it had not been for my wife and the ward's tea room microwave for heating the lowish carb meals she brought in for me on a regular basis.

When I was in for day surgery just after last Christmas, I was asked about dietary requirements and said "Low Carbohydrate". The nurse didn't bat an eyelid! They only give sandwiches in the Day Surgery Unit after you've recovered. I was offered an egg mayonnaise in wholemeal bread -"probably the best we can do" she said. Fine by me after a general anaesthetic - plenty of fat to offset the bread, and wholemeal doesn't affect me too much anyway, if I keep it to 'occasionally'. She seemed to know what I was getting at, at least.

The coffee was wonderful, too  .

I don't know what would happen if I was in overnight - I seem to remember something they thought was macaroni cheese  , and a sort-of crumble. But I wasn't diabetic then.

Our practice nurse, who is in her 50s, remember giving diabetics porridge with double cream when doing her ward training. Non-diabetics got milk. Seems things have changed!

The veggie 'option' at our local was jacket spuds with beans.
