Hi All

I am a newbie T2 since Oct 09, I have been refered to the local training course "x-pert" anyway they teach all kinds of things about being diabetic and I have learnt a lot and the following maybe a departure from the rest of the NHS advice on diet

Eat a healthy balanced diet, however you should also watch the amount of carbs you eat during the day. It was also pointed out that although I have dtiched a daily chocalte bar with fruit i could be eating less fat but could be eating more carbs which in turn would be worse for my blood gluclose. We where also told if by dinner time we had exeecded the carb limit, a zero carb tea would be a good idea.

Now they are not saying dont eat carbs, they are saying eat 3 meals a day with carbs. For our homework we have to do a food dairy for a day and next week we will have our carbs for that day calculated for us. We have not yet been told what the guidline figure is, but i think it is interesting that we in Hull are being told this.

Sorry if I rambled on

Andy

Hi Andy.

This just goes to show that the dietary advice is patchy, some use the 'old school' plenty of starchy carbs' then like you state, they want you to be careful of carbs, reduce them. That's very similar to the advice at my GP Surgery in the West Midlands. It's a pity it isn't standard everywhere.

Let us know how you get on and if there any other 'gems' as you go through the course.

That sounds encouraging, Andy. Hull is, of course, out on a limb. We were there before the Humber Bridge.

I'm starting the X-pert course next Saturday - after 10 years! I was invited on it by a dietitian(!) after I emailed my concerns about diet.

We run an Xpert group education course for Type 2 patients and Hidap for Type 1 patients. You are welcome to attend these sessions and I am sure other patients would benefit from hearing about how you are self manging your diabetes so well.
Could be interesting ...

Hi all

Completed my course, it was very useful and I have learnt a lot about diabetes I would say to anyone in Hull if you get an invite to diabetec training GO TO IT.

Anyway these are the amounts of carbs that have been recommended for T2's in Hull.

Safe minimum = 100g

recommended level between 150g to 250g

When we buy/eat food our first choice should be how many carbs the item contains, our second thought should be is it healthy if not is there a healthier choice

I am going to start on monday and will iniatially go for 250g, I know some of you may say thats still to high, but i need to start slowly and reduce my carbs over a period of time otherwise it would be to dificult for me to do. Previous to this I was eating 2500kals / 400g carbs a day

Andy

Hi Andy,

By all means start at 250g and then reduce slowly. The upper limit of 250g is a lot of carbs in one day though, why not start at 200g and reduce?

I would personaly endorse the lower limit of 100g. I eat anywhere between 90g-130g without any ill-effect, and keep good control too, although I must point out that I am type 1. As I was told the minimum of carbs to eat should be no less than 120g, it would seem there is a consensus amounst the medical establishment that 100-120g of carbs is a adequate figure to sustain the body efficiently !

Nigel

I fully endorse all that Nigel has said.

I think I too would be more inclined to start with 200g and then work at it. Try using a side plate for your main meals, it immediately will cut down the number of carbs AND the portion size.

It's surprising how quickly you get used to eating much less this way. The plate looks loaded and your brain is telling you.....yummy....loads of food. All in the mind you see.

A portion of any food, is theoretically, what you could hold in the palm of one hand.
I use this guideline to serve meals for my normal healthy toddler grandchild, so I know she's getting about the right amount of everything. (HER hands for her portions) I now serve myself a little more than I give her, I have weight issues and after a LONG stall ( about a year) I've started losing again.
I'll be eating off a Bunnykins plate next.

That is a nifty hint about portion sizes Hana as an appropriate size can be quite difficult to gauge.

Congratulations on the weight starting to shift again - a year is a l-o-n-g time to be stuck and very hard to persevere to overcome it! :)
